Movie That Still Scares Me

Actually the issue of climate change first came into my mind by watching a movie in 2004. The name of the movie was ¡°The Day After Tomorrow¡±. After watching this movie I become so scared about the consequences of global warming that I couldn¡¯t forget the scenes for many days. The movie was about mainly affects of global warming. In the movie they showed the ice of Antarctic starts to melt. Several buoys in the Atlantic Ocean show a severe ocean temperature drop. Eventually, a massive storm system develops in the northern hemisphere, splitting into three superstorms above Canada, Scotland, and Siberia. The gigantic hurricane-like storms pull frozen air from the upper troposphere into their center, flash-freezing anything caught in their eyes with temperatures below −150 degrees Fahrenheit (-101 degrees Celsius). Meanwhile, the weather worsens across the world; Tokyo is struck by a giant hail storm, sea levels in Nova Scotia rise 25 feet (7 meters) in a matter of seconds, and Los Angeles is devastated by a tornado outbreak. As the North American storm continues to grow and move south, a rising wall of water forms in the vicinity of Ellis Island, swallowing the Statue of Liberty and bound straight for the city; the several-dozen-foot-high storm surge soon strikes New York, washing through city streets and sweeping away everything in its path. I was totally horrified by the events that tookplace in this movie. It created an impact in my little heart.

Hello Sumit, I saw that movie too and it still remains in my mind deeply with its instinctive and distinctive impact to raise 'awareness' for my self-identity : keep eyes on the world as human beings did 'way too many' things to the nature.
Concerning the drastic and fast iceage in the movie existed in real, during Younger Dryas stadial. Dryas stage covers the era of Scandinavian countries, and it is allegedly known that the movement of sea currents stopped or slowed down way too much. The movement of sea currents disperse the overall heat inside the atmosphere of Earth, but if so, it may lead polar regions extremely cold as the effect of the sun does not focus onto it as usual.
However, as you might have already known so far, the speed of melting glaciers is really fast and faster than we expect, and this means fresh water keeps increasing in sea water: dropping the overall salinity level around it. If fresh water moves toward to the bottom of the sea (deep sea), it interrupts the regular movement of sea water: cold water sinks to the bottom but fresh water with low salinity still remains on the sea level. This fresh water 'can' change the movement of deep sea current.
Apparently, areas placed at high latitudes may lose a lot of heat and it would lead to 'climate change and weather change'. If such movements keep making regular sea current movement slow down or stop it, we cannot avoid Younger Dryas stodial as well (just scientific clues to be given out to explain). As such, 'the day after tomorrow' might be really cold for us :(
Thanks for your report and introducing my iconic movie too! :)

    Hello Sumit
I remember watching this movie with my mother when I was young and was frightened for a few days afterwards of the occurence of such disasters. In South Korea the title was translated into simply 'tomorrow', probably considering that when translated the simple term could people more.
    Thanks for sharing!

Hello Sumit! Not heard about this movie, frightening look. On the other hand, such a film makes us think about the consequences of climate change. Perhaps the strong emotional impact of art will force humanity to recover and make more efforts to preserve the environment.
    Thanks for the report!
