Land Degradation

by Natasha Singh | 21-11-2018 01:05 recommendations 0

Land degradation refers to a decline in the overall quality of soil, water or vegetation conditions commonly caused by human activities. It can occur due to natural or artificial processes, such as wind-erosion, water-erosion, water logging, etc. The most important human factor that causes extensive land degradation is the unstable and irresponsible use of land and incorrect agricultural management practices. Land degradation is a serious issue as it leads to the depletion of valuable soil nutrients and adversely impacts foodgrain production. This is a threat to global food security. Poor land and farming practices are responsible for continuous land degradation.

There are many factors responsible for land degradation. A major cause is deforestation, which leads to loss of vegetation cover. This promotes wind erosion and washing away of the topsoil. Another important phenomenon responsible for land degradation is overgrazing. Overgrazing is defined as the grazing of natural pastures at stocking intensities above the livestock carrying capacity. Often, human settlements spring up at the edge of forested areas and encroach into the forest lands. Even after the cumulative effects of all these factors manifests as land degradation, the concerned authorities fail to adopt sufficient soil conservation measures. This compounds the existing problem. Moreover, forests and tree groves are important sources of fuel and fodder, particularly for rural dwellers. However, unsustainable resource extraction seriously impacts the health of the land. Unsystematic use of chemically-laced pesticides, insecticides and weedicides is another worrying issue. Other unmethodical agricultural practices include improper planning and management of irrigation systems and extraction of groundwater in excess of recharge capacity.

There are many solutions which can be easily and safely implemented to combat the growing menace of land degradation. Forestation and increasing the area under forest cover can minimise risks associated with loss of fertile soil due to wind, water, human activities etc. Farmers and herders should be educated about good agricultural practices so that their various agro-activities such as grazing, crop rotation, irrigation and so on are carried out safely. Appropriate corrections should be made in the pre-existing eco-policies. Antiquated practices like shifting cultivation and thoughtless exploitation of natural resources should be curbed.

Unless some serious steps are taken, we will continue to wrangle with the problem of land degradation.

    Hello Natasha
Land degradation is certainly a serious problem that we are facing in thise era and if we continue to damage the nature's asset for human greed, we won't be able to see green land again.
    Thanks for the report!

Hello Natasha, land up to the size of 32 soccer fields get deforested and fall under desertification for 'every minute' following the statistic report these days. Desertification has been allegedly known that it used to be existent in regions far from cities, but distance gap did not just mean that we could evade from it. Alike desertification, degradation problems are overwhelming the previous field of modern lifestyles.
Thanks for your report with precise analysis on land degradation and desertification

Hello Natasha Singh, Namaste from Nepal

Lang degradation is a very serious problems noways due to abnormal climate and change i waterfall pattern .
Few days back i saw a video, how a Indian engineer is saving more than 20 drought lakes, he have mission to make more than 100 lake again full of water.
He is just one good example, there are lots of good and bad example, we always have to be good example to save our land, nature, earth.
Use of insecticides, pesticides, fungicides and other chemicals are deteriorating our soil, so we should go for organic,
As in Sikkim in India, ban of every chemical in plants help to maintain the quality of soil.

Due to random cut down of trees we are facing the problems of land degradation, if we cut a tree we must plant two tress,
Plastic pollution is aiding in land degradation, so we must consider all of these thing and save our land being destroyed. There may be other things too, that we must do to save our land.

Thank you so much for the report.

    Hi Natasha!

What saddens me about land degradation is how water plays a major role in destroying the soil structure and unbinds the soil nutrients. Thank you for informing us about land degradation. This a very serious issue that needs to be discussed.

The solutions you have placed such as forestation is a basic yet super ideal, even planting indigenous plants goes a long way in enduring that soil is not lost by runoff. Lnd degradation not only causes destability in the soil, but the bigger picture involves, the health of the Earth and the people who need that land to survive.

Thank you for reporting Natasha! Lovely!
