About Soil Erosion

by Chabala Chisenga | 18-12-2018 16:17 recommendations 0

Hello Fellow Ambassadors, Eco Generation Management, Members and Visitors,

Soil erosion is the displacement of the upper layer of soil, one form of soil degradation .

This natural process is caused by the dynamic activity of erosive agents, that is, water, ice (glaciers), snow, air (wind), plants, animals, and humans.

In accordance with these agents, erosion is sometimes divided into water erosion, glacial erosion, snow erosion, wind (aeolean) erosion, zoogenic erosion, and anthropogenic erosion.

Soil erosion may be a slow process that continues relatively unnoticed, or it may occur at an alarming rate causing a serious loss of topsoil.

The loss of soil from farmland may be reflected in reduced crop production potential, lower surface water quality and damaged drainage networks.

Human activities have increased by 10–40 times the rate at which erosion is occurring globally. Excessive (or accelerated) erosion causes both "on-site" and "off-site" problems.

On-site impacts include decreases in
agricultural productivity and (on
natural landscapes ) ecological collapse, both because of loss of the nutrient-rich upper soil layers.

In some cases, the eventual end result is desertification .

Off-site effects include sedimentation of waterways and eutrophication of water bodies, as well as sediment-related damage to roads and houses.

Water and wind erosion are the two primary causes of land degradation ; combined, they are responsible for about 84% of the global extent of degraded land, making excessive erosion one of the most significant environmental problems worldwide.

Intensive agriculture , deforestation ,
roads , anthropogenic climate change and urban sprawl are amongst the most significant human activities in regard to their effect on stimulating erosion.

However, there are many
prevention and remediation practices that can curtail or limit erosion of vulnerable soils.

Hello Chabala, just like climate change, soil erosion does have many reasons and causes to develop its progression. However, as you might already know, human-caused elements devoting to soil erosion in deserted areas of Northern China, Sahara Desert and other regions are outnumbering those of natural causes (allegedly known due to modern society and its development). Reducing the risks and risk-alike elements must be handled clearly, but soil erosion is in fast speed way too much these days :(
Just like technology that Kushal mentioned below, we need some definite forms of approaches to prevent such changes :)
    Thanks for your report

    Hello Chabala
'Human activities have increased by 10&#821140 times the rate at which erosion is occurring globally.'
Human acts truly have been accelerating many natural occurrences that really should not be converging to this speed rate.
Before things get out of hand, we should be making changes to recover what we have lost.
    Thanks for the report!

    Hello Chabala
Hope you are fit and healthy there,

Soil erosion is major problem of hilly areas, but in plain also soil erosion is seen, Reforestation is the mojor solution for this problem.
Bio engineering in slopy land can reduce soil erosion.
Thank you for the report. :)

Soil erosion has been a problem in the hilly region of our country Nepal too. Hilly region has slopy areas which are prone to soil erosion.
Afforestation programs must be conducted to reduce the soil erosion.
SALT is a new technology which is sustainable way to reduce soil erosion. SALT is Slopy Agriculture Land Technology which takes into account the sustainable way of reducing soil erosion along with taking economic benefits from it.
I will be writing a report on SALT technology, hope you read and comment your views on it.

Hello Chabala and it's good to have you back!

Yes, soil erosion is one form of land degradation that is most prominent in the agricultural industry. And it is seen outside the industry as well. The fact that Human activities have increased erosion from 10 to 40 times that of what it was originally makes you realise how in deep of a mess we really are and we are so ignorant we are to the cause.

We need to start practicing prevention and remediation applications to at least see gradual change in out ecosystems.

    Thank you for reporting Chabala!
    Yours sincerely
    R
