Environmental Impact of the Petroleum Industry (Soil Contamination)I was born in a country blessed with ¡°The black gold¡± but also a country that has been damaging their environment by Its Petroleum Industry. Mexico is one of The Top 10 Oil-producing Countries, this has pushed forward the country. Nevertheless, it has had a big impact on the environment, particularly soil. PEMEX (Mexican Petroleum) is the most important company in Mexico, the largest tax contributor to the Mexican government, although this company is responsible for the 57% of environmental emergencies in the Country. Many of the environmental emergencies have been caused by the oil spill and fuel theft. There are around 5,207 contaminated sites, a total of 1,037 hectares and only 14.4% of these sites have been treated. The rest is ignored by PEMEX. This company evades its responsibility by saying that many of these contaminated places have been polluted by clandestine outlets in their pipes and not by them. One of the last oil spills has occurred near my hometown, it was big ecocide. Near of 90 families were evacuated from their homes because the zone had a high risk of explosion. Not only the Tepeyac river was polluted, but also the Soil and air of the zone. Now the river is so polluted with solvents that a disposable plate can be dissolved within 1 minute if it is exposed to the river water. The local people had to block the highway in order to demand the environmental remediation of the area. Their requests were heard, although the damage is already done. Many fishes, turtles, birds and almost every living organism in that area are dead. PEMEX is still working in the environmental remediation of the area and they managed to keep the problem from expanding to a bigger river. However, the soil is totally polluted, and the damage is invaluable. This oil spill was caused by fuel theft. Unfortunately, this is only one case of thousands around the country. Oil thieves have about 6,873 illegal perforations on PEMEX pipelines. The problem of fuel theft is an internal problem and a big concern of the New Mexico¡¯s government. Since the change of government, a month ago, there have been good changes in Mexico. A new strategic plan has started in order to eliminate fuel theft and within four days the fuel theft has decreased by 17%. This plan has big expectations, it will not only benefit the Oil Sales but also the environment and safety of the population. Source: Heidi I. Villafán Vidales. (18-04-2018). Petroleum industries are multi billion dollar industries. Developing our cities, we are deteriorating our environment.

Hola Eli, I saw a couple of huge oil spill incidents before and one of them also took the place in my country too, about 10 years ago. It is just like cotton candy that is so delicious and sweet but resulting in cavities. Black Gold itself has changed the world forever, but what we are facing right now is full of environmental problems led by it. We have to choose and look for other alternative energy sources, such as renewable energies :)
Thanks for your report! Feliz año nuevo

Hello Eli
I was quite familiar with oil spillage problem happening on the sea, which is usually caused by accidents during transportation or the defect of the shipping vessel.
However, as I read this report, I can see that the problem is a more general thing, which contaminates soil and also the groundwater beneath.
Hope laws and policies could guide more corporations to self examine and prevent such things and additionally contribute to environmental matters.
Thanks for the report!

Hey there Eli!
I trust you are well.
Oil leakages and the subsequent contamination is one of the greatest threat to the environment especially that of soil and water. It is unfortunate that the company involved has not been taking than necessary actions in order to eliminate oil theft.
Being a hydrogeologist I am very much concerned about the groundwater State in your Neighborhood because I assume that many of the community members use groundwater for domestic use and drinking water means.
I commend your community members or standing up to the ignorant behaviour of the PEMEX company. It is this behaviour that we need to involve too many who continue to turn a Blind Side to the dangers their causing to the environment.
Though the oil company contributes a whopping 57% to the government, the government should still continue to make sure that the oil company is observing to the environment sensitive laws and regulation of the nation of Mexico.
Thankfully how did there is a new government system in the nation of Mexico I really hope and believe that all said will be peace further than 17%
Thank you so much for your report Eli I found this report very intriguing and very insightful.
Have a prosperous and blessed new year ahead in advance!
Yours sincerely

Eli,
Your experience is similar to what some Nigerians are facing in the southern part of the country, as it is a oil-rich location.
If the exploration and refining of cruds oil is really a huge source of income to a country, then the country should be ready to give it what it takes to reduce its environmental impact, using the income we generate from it.
It has always been a sad news since inception. I hope the government do something about it.
Thanks for the report. Happy new year!

Sad to know that how the petroleum industries have been contributing so much to the environment pollution there. As these industries are major tax payer, they must separate some amount to the environment conservative too. They can take the example of how Samsung engineering is contributing to save the environment by taking the initiative by creating a environmental platform for youth and Children.
Thank you Eli for the beautiful report explaining us the situation being create there.
Wishing you a happy and prosperous new year and keep writing great reports :) :) :)
