To quote the National Commission for UNESCO's aims for the event Youth for UNESCO, it is to: "highlight the need to build peace in the minds of women and men, because it is in the same mental faculties of people that wars begin. Apparently, peace have to be instilled in various elements of society: through an inclusive education, through a scientific discourse, through the arts and culture of nations alongside its heritage, through a functional human rights system and a full freedom of expression. The message of UNESCO ¡°are of increasing importance today, in a globalized world where interconnectedness and diversity must serve as opportunities to build peace in the minds of men and women¡±.
Youth for UNESCO, or Y4U took place in Quezon City from September 6-9, 2018. Hundreds of people from around the country, and even in areas such as Nepal and India came to visit. Since many clubs accredited by UNESCO were present, such as that of myself, it was a way to collaborate with each other to work on further initiatives. In drafting resolutions, to listening to keynote speakers, to participating in quizzes related to the SDGs, there were plenty of things to celebrate. This said process can be definitely attributed to the environment as well, as I was a speaker at the said event on the topic of student led research. In talking about the concept of using technology such as AutoCAD to sustainably design a given city, we were able to obtain the award for best speaker presentation. My UNESCO organization, Earth Savers, also helped contribute in environmental related discussions such as the maintenance of heritage sites, and this led us to obtain the award of being one of the top 10 UNESCO clubs in the Philippines. Having attended this annual conference for two years already, I always find that there is something more to learn. New connections through new friends as well as new topics learned in regards to student leadership is always something to look out for. It is an inspiration for more initiatives to be led.
