Ukraine is a state with an agricultural type of economy, so it is not in vain that the soil (namely, black soil or chernozem) is considered to be the most significant wealth of Ukraine. At the same time, in Ukraine, as well as in the whole world, there is a particularly dangerous process of soil degradation, or the loss of its fertility, which experts call the ¡°peaceful crisis of the planet¡±. The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ostap Semerak, said that Ukraine is suffering from soil degradation as well as economic losses. He emphasised that ¡°depending on the degree of degradation processes, damage from the lack of agricultural products is more than 20 milliard Ukrainian hrivnas year (approximately 723 million the US dollars)¡±. However, there is still no comprehensive state policy on this issue. Scientists note that most of the soil suffered due to loss of humus and nutrients, leading to abnormal production of plants, about 43%. 39% of the lands have been affected by over-densification, and 38% have been affected by the formation of the crust. Much soil is poisoned with harmful substances: 11% of grants are saturated with radionuclides, 9.3% of the soil is contaminated with pesticides, 8% - heavy metals. In the north of Ukraine, a large number of areas of infection with radionuclides - caesium, strontium. It takes 300 years to complete their decay. Unfortunately, it is not so easy to change the situation. One of the ideas that can have a positive effect on the process is to celebrate World Soil Day, as it allows us to draw attention to such an important issue as soil degradation. The World Soil Day unites people in the world for a common cause - protecting our soils from exhaustion, destruction, degradation, and also for reproduction of their fertility. It is not easy and at the same time a noble cause. |

Hello Anna, raising 'something' as problem and publicize as social issue, we need some triggers to do so. Like Gyeongrin mentor said below, celebration or memorial day usually take place in high rank to make it so, but people usually forget about it in a day or two because it is not that iconic or drastic change of meaning in our lives. Strictly speaking, we need social movement and governmental discipline to convey the problem into 'solution'. Soil degradation is also not an issue or problem for people to feel it and face it directly in short time, but as it progressively affects living, it will make people acknowledge what they are facing.
What I am concerned about soil degradation is loss of edible stuffs, meaning famine and poverty to the poor. Poverty has always been existent for thousands of years, but soil degradation is not irreversible problem for us to let it go as it happens.
Thanks for your report, and hope it gets better off in near future for Ukraine!

The situations seems similar to Nepal there in Ukraine.
Nepal too is an agricultural country and the situation of soil is also degrading here. With the lank of proper management of the soil, desertification is occurring in many parts of the nation.
We must focus on proper management of the soil.
Thank you Anna for highlighting the situation over there. Keep writing great reports.
We are always looking forward for your new reports.
Do leave meaningful comments in the fellow ambassadors' post too.
Wishing you happy and prosperous new year 2019
Green cheers from the land of Lord Buddha and Himalayas.

Hello Anna
The value and importance of the black soil was stressed in previous reports and this report lets me know about a more specific situation that these soils are facing in Ukraine.
As the report says, celebrating days do bring attention and interest to the problem and hope these events could mitigate the soil crisis.
Thanks for the report and happy new year :)

Hi, Anna! Happy New Year!
I come from the Rostov region, which borders on Ukraine. My grandmother comes from Sumy (Ukraine) and I speak Ukrainian a little, I know Ukrainian songs and I love Ukrainian borsch.
Now our countries, to my great regret, are in confrontation. One of my strongest wishes is for relations between our countries to improve again.
As for the topic of your report-Yes, black soil is a great value of our countries, and it is extremely distressing that this type of soil is in danger.
I sincerely wish your country prosperity, as well as the development of effective laws that would help to solve the problem of soil erosion.

Good day Anna!
And compliments of the New Year!
I have once read up on the soil type that you have mentioned in a previous article done by Nikolay. It looks like the soil scientifically know as chernozem is really under threat. Moreover, it is a hugs agricultural resource that is being stressed.
I concur that now more than ever, in order to start a mitigation program, one must start with an awareness programme so as to make the masses aware of the precious resource that is being destroyed.
Another good idea is to tackle this issue with direct involvement of the SDGs. Such as goal 15: Life on Land and goal 2: Zero Hunger. These 2 goal work hand in hand with each other and may help counter soil degradation in the Nation of Ukraine.
Thank you so much for your report writing!
Yours sincerely
R.
