Visit to Hydroponics Farm

What a great day for me,

Today with 6 agriculture students (my friends) and I visited a Hydroponics Farm. Dibya Bhatta (Ambassador) told me about this farm with hi-tech yesterday; today we visited this farm and learn about a lot of aspects of this type of agriculture.

The science of soil-less gardening is called hydroponics. It basically involves growing healthy plants without the use of a traditional soil medium by using a nutrient like a mineral rich water solution instead. A plant just needs select nutrients, some water, and sunlight to grow. Not only do plants grow without soil, they often grow a lot better with their roots in water instead.

Hydroponics is a subset of hydro culture, which is a method of growing plants without soil by using mineral nutrients solution in a water solvent. Terrestrial plants may be grown with only their roots exposed to the mineral solution, or the roots may be supported by an inert medium, such as perlite, coconut hairs or gravel

The nutrients used in hydroponic systems can come from an array of different sources; these can include, but are not limited to, byproduct from fish waste, duck manure, or purchased chemical fertilizer.

Advantage of Hydroponics over Traditional Soil-Grown Crop Production,

  • Up to 90% more efficient use of water.
  • Production increases 3 to 10 times in the same amount of space.
  • Many crops can be produced twice as fast in a well managed hydroponic system.
  • Decreasing the time between harvest and consumption increases the nutritional value of the end product.
  • Indoor farming in a climate controlled environment means farms can exist in places where weather and soil conditions are not favorable for traditional food production.
  • No chemical weed or pest control products are needed when operating a hydroponic system.

We learn many aspects of this type of farming system; this is completely new for us. I want to thank Dibya Bhatta for this special visit.

 Thank You :)

    Hello Deepak
I remember being astonished as a child when I learned that I could actually grow plants without soils and I actually took my chance to grow an onion at home.
With hydroponic farming, it seems that more opportunities are given to those who cannot get access to fertile lands.
It is always nice to see when the fruits of manmade developments could actually be used to save our nature :)
Thanks for sharing about hydroponic farming!

Wow, lots of feedbacks up here :)
It was such a good activity to visit a new place with our regional ambassador to try a new thing and share it with us
I heard about hydroponics farm before but I had no chance to get there.
Likewise, other regional ambassadors can also read your reports and get to understand more about it without visiting the farm :)
    Thanks for your report!

    Hey Deepak!

I am glad to see that our ambassadors collaborated in an effort to learn about Hydroponics Farming. I have some knowledge to this regard, but I am amazed that this method has been scaled to a massive scale.

This may be the future to better farming. But I am concerned about the volume of water it may need to sustain and nurture crops. It has so many advantages, and these advantages are what we need to counter act soil degradation, and food security.

I am really fascinated about this type of farming, thank you for inlightening us with your report Deepak!

    Stay Joyous and live green!

Hydrophonics - that's a very good intiative. It is good to understand that the basic requirements for the germination of a plant are far more than the soil itself. Anishka has told us it is well practiced in UAE. Thanks for sharing this Deepak.

Thank you Deepak dai for sharing your visit with us.

Hydroponics is new technique in the context of Nepali agriculture. We had kept this technique for demonstration in last year Sundarbazar Fair for farmers here. I too had volunteered for the fair to explain this to the people coming to the fair. This would be a great in the context of urban areas.

Keep writing great reports dai. Green Cheers :) :)

    Hello Anishka Jha, Namaste
I wish for your healthy body and positive mind.
Yes, this technology is very useful and helpful where there is scarcity of water and fertile land, we have lots of fertile land, but now days such technologies are going famous because of high turnover.
Thank You for your comment. :)

Great report Deepak. In UAE where the climate is not favourable for traditional crop production but Hydroponics farm has revolutionised the farming culture of the country. We see lots of local produce now. Thanks for sharing:)
