"Save Food save wastage"

by Hassan Nasir | 20-01-2019 21:25 recommendations 0

In Pakistan we have a culture of hoteling and families these days are interested in eating food in restaurants. Restaurants are now extremely profitable businesses in Pakistan. This is merely because people have lost interest in cooking food for them and restaurants are offering presumptuous food. It is alarming to know that 40% of food wasted globally is the Pakistan¡¯s share of wasting food.

We are called a developing nation yet our citizens are extravagant when it comes to spending money in food. We all talk about poverty but what if we actually cater poverty by appropriately channelizing the food chains throughout our country. In a newspaper Pakistan today article published that 6 out of 10 people go to bed hungry. It was also stated that Pakistan is ranked 107 at Global Hunger Index.

It is alarming to notice that still we people are wasting food at a quiet enormous level. So to avoid food hunger I would suggest that food chains and restaurants must be directed to don¡¯t waste the food. However what they can do is recycle the food which is left over and distribute it to the marginalized segments of the society. I am highly optimistic that if we would do the redistribution of the food this way then surely we can feed every citizen of the Pakistan in a better way.

I would further share some facts about Food wastage which are shared by OLIO organization

1. 1\3 of food produced is wasted globally

2. Annual value of food wasted worldwide is 1$ trillion

3. World¡¯s 1 billion can be fed by the food that is wasted in UK, Europe and America

4.25% of the water is used to grow food which is never eaten.

5. An area larger than China is used to grow food that is never eaten.

Wow, lots of feedbacks up here.
I do think social equality and poverty issues are in close relationship, especially in field of food resource and its management. Though the whole amount of food in the world is about 2.2 times more than individual ones can eat in this 21st century, but it is ironic to see many people are starving to death still.
Likewise, changing habits not to cook inside home will bring something new to food market, and change it drastically.
Hope it can lead people a bit more concentrated into managing individual dietary habits.
Thanks for your report, this was really interesting report and topic

    Hello Hassan
It would be nice if food could be allocated where it is most needed so that no waste would be left with people in hunger. To make it possible, policies could be of help to reduce waste in food suppliers and as for food suppliers, they could manage their food supply chain that from the first ordering point, less food would be wasted.
Also most of all, an awareness raising among individuals about food waste will be a prior thing to bring more people conscious to this matter.
    Thanks for the report!

Its a pity the world wastes so much food. Food waste causes two way damage, one is waste of the precious resources, secondly, it rots and produces methane gas emissions leading to atmospheric pollution.

This report reminds me of my own report about food waste during festivals which I had written a couple of months ago. I had also uploaded a video on the same topic.

As large amount of food is wasted. The food are lost as post harvest loss and extra food after consumption which contributes to large amount of waste. The best solution to it is to reduce the food waste. We must compost the waste food so that they can recycled and used as organic fertilizer.

Thank you for your beautiful report Hassan.
    Keep writing great reports.
Best wishes from your fellow ambassador from Nepal
    Green Cheers :) :)
