Hello my dear friends from Eco-gen,
Hope you are faring well! Since this my first Ambassador report for the new term, I hope I can make this as elaborate as possible so that all the new ambassadors come to know how to write a report :-) Recently, I attended a very interesting community lecture by the EEG on the super-duper interesting topic of Climate Change: Science, Impacts & Solutions I wold like to share the Experience and knowledge that I gained during this process. This lecture was very effectively given by Mr. Timothy Paul Head of Environment and Sustainability Maersk Line, West and central Asia. Mr. Timothy Paul is the United Arab Emirates Climate Change Leader for the Climate Reality Project and the Head of Environment and Sustainability for Maersk Line?s West and Central Asia Region. As a climate leader, Mr.Timothy conducts educational seminars for businesses, schools, universities and community groups on the science, impacts and solutions to climate change. The Lecture covered the following points: • Scientific reasons behind climate change, its impact and proposed solutions for mitigation • Ways to minimize the disconnect between understanding of carbon emission locally and its impact globally with regional and global cases • Enhance the understanding of effects of local carbon emissions on global climate reality • How community and businesses can and must solve the climate crises and how each one can help with a focus on Climate Reality Project • Understanding to drive higher level of ambition, innovation and collaboration to accelerate responsible climate practices First of all, Mr. Timothy brought the main picture in front of us. He told us about the situation that we are present in right now and also explained to us that according to hoe we are going, by 2050, the temperature will face an increase of 2.5 degrees centigrade and by 2100, it will face an increase of 4-5 degrees centigrade which is an alarming rate to be taken into consideration. UAE has the highest emission of carbon per capita in the whole world due to the usage of fossil fuels. What can be dome? How to stop this menace? Let us see how. Robert F. Kennedy, CEO of the Change Initiative in the UAE and son of the former president of the USA, John Kennedy, was handcuffed and taken to White House prison because he was an activist on Climate Change. Mr. Tim posed a question at this point. Would we, as global citizens have done that? How would we have reacted? Alarming temperatures have been recorded all over the world this year as it is right in front of our very eyes. For example, for the first time in history, shocking temperatures soaring upto 53.5 degrees Celsius has been recorded in Karachi, Pakistan. 2013 was the 38th consecutive year in which, the temperatures have gone way above the average temperature and also June 2013 was the 340th consecutive month in a row in which the temperatures have gone above the average temperature. September 2012 was officially termed as the hottest month ever, globally. This is merely the due result of the CO2 gas emitted by us in our day to day lives. We as individuals, probably think, what can one lousy person make a difference? How can a single individual do so much as to reduce global warming and stop climate change? It is then when we have to keep the thought in our mind that small drops make a huge ocean. If even 4 billion people of the 7.8 billion population on the earth start adopting the day to day practices in our lives, the greenhouse gases produced can be reduces by more than 60 percent. Now, moving on to the scientific reason for this Climate Change. When solar radiation comes form the sun, it is reflected by the atmosphere and the earth and absorbed by the earth.when it is reflected it gives of even more heat and therefore enlarges the blanket of atmosphere which can be harmful for us. Mr. Tim also explained the connection between climate change and disasters that occur due to climatic change. He told us that most hurricanes are usually caused because when the air gets really, really hot, it can hold more water vapor. According to the hydro logical cycle, when rain comes down as precipitation, it can also condense the huge amount of humidity in the air and result in a petrifying cloud burst. Examples are hurricane sandy, Uttrakhand floods, etc. According to the prediction of scientists, the heat that we are producing, in a few yeas will be equivalent to the heat produced by 400,000 nuclear bombs like the one that had hit Hiroshima, every day. The impacts of these actions are huge. For example, in Pakistan, in 2010, 20,000,000 people were affected, lost their lives, houses, etc as the floods went ragging through the roads of Pakistan and caused havoc everywhere. The main points that we have for solutions are:
Mr. Timothy had an amazing presentation regarding this topic and he conveyed it really very well through visuals, videos and interesting statistics graphs. I hope that I was able to convey the message to you as effectively so that you would have learned and understood as much as I did. There is still time. If we go on the right path now, we can make it. Best Regards, Rohan Kapur Ambassador to UAE

Dear Christy,
As I have already mentioned in the above report, one of the steps that we have to take as Climate Justice promoters is that spread awareness among all our peers. It is my duty to inform all the members of Eco-generation about where we are, what are the consequences and what are its impacts and solutions. In this amazing process, I really don't mind putting in a little effort. Kudos to Tunza Ecogeneration!!!!!
This lecture was attended not only by me but also by two other regional ambassadors, ARUSHI MADAN and RAUNAK KAPUR
Regards,
Rohan
