PROJECT OR CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT CLIMATE CHANGE AND MAKE MY LOCAL COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY

by Anishka Jha | 11-02-2019 03:04 recommendations 0

Continuation of my campaign or project......

My two primary sources to aid me in the development of this project were Ms Campbell, an environmental sciences teacher and Aruna Narayanan, Head of Environment Solutions Strategic Initiatives, at Dulsco, a Waste Management company in UAE.  I was able to receive information regarding the design, effectiveness, usability, reliability and constant overall improvements from Ms Campbell as she had worked in the making of compost bins earlier. While Aruna provided highly effective and accurate information that I was able to transfer to my project. I was able to find first-hand information from both sources as Ms Campbell has published several studies and 4 reports on recycling materials while I personally met Aruna Narayanan, who provided me with real life data and personal notes to improve my product. Although both sources have a masters and Phd. in their respective field, their information was validated by peers and several secondary sources therefore the information was recent, relevant and extremely precise.

Secondary Research: Polystyrene, that mainly composes Styrofoam, has such a long history and evolution behind it. A German apothecary, Eduard Simon discovered polystyrene in 1839. He isolated it from natural resin, but he did not realize what he had discovered. Another German organic chemist, Hermann Staudinger realized the discovery that Eduard Simon made was comprised of long chains of styrene molecules, which is plastic polymer. Later in 1922, Hermann Staudinger published his theory about polymers. (Stephans, 2015) He stated that natural rubbers were made up of long repetitive chains of monomers that gave its elasticity to rubber. Ray McIntire, who was a Dow Chemical Company scientist, invented foamed Polystyrene, which is Styrofoam. He said it was an accident, but his invention came as he was trying to find a flexible electrical insulator. Polystyrene was a good insulator, but it was too brittle. (Matt, 2014) So he tried to make a new polymer that is like rubber as he combined styrene with isobutylene, which is a volatile liquid, under pressure. As a result, the Polystyrene foamed with bubbles, and it was 30 times lighter than regular Polystyrene. (Kinhal, 2016) Use of polystyrene: Polystyrene, which is a strong plastic created from ethylene and benzene, can be injected, extruded or blow molded to make a very useful and manufacturing material, which is called Styrofoam. Styrofoam is well known as it is used for beverage cups and packaging. Polystyrene in Styrofoam is also used in building material, household items, and electrical appliances, such as light switches and plates. Impacts: Styrofoam has become such an accepted everyday product that people often don¡¯t understand how Styrofoam harms the environment and people exposed to it. Some of its social effects are that it composes of benzene and styrene, both of which are known human carcinogens. Microwaving Styrofoam causes the release of toxic chemicals, which poses a threat to human health. Its environmental effects are that polystyrene takes at least five hundred years to decompose and the production of styrofoam is energy intensive, creating large amounts of greenhouse gases. Soil contamination is turning into a significant issue nowadays, and junk that can't be decomposed normally, for example, Styrofoam, is demonstrating it's concern as it costs a lot of cash to reuse it, it squanders an enormous measure of room, and it does not have numerous approaches to be reused in an eco-accommodating way. Limonene, from strips of specific organic products, for example, orange and lemon can break up styrofoam without causing any ecological contamination. So this project presents the new created thought of reusing styrofoam in an eco-friendly way.
