Our ecosystem has been plagued with many pandemic and ill- situations. Looking at my community, Aberdeen, in Sierra Leone, there is a mass exodus of garbage in the community. Freetown as a city is plagued with debris and this is quite unhealthy of people. This issue has been of concern to many state and non state actors as there is an increase in the number of outbreaks in the country. On Saturday 7th September, 2013 The Freetown Waste Management declared it a cleaning day for the city of Freetown. It was declared a curfew as all the inhabitants were expected to participate fully to ensure that our city is clean and tidy.
On the contrary, it was observed that after the cleaning exercise the streets became filthier than they were before. This is as a result of the fact that, after cleaning their compounds and vicinities there was not enough litter cans and disposable containers. Therefore, when there is a little down pour of rain, the debris and filth is being carried away by the running water making it quite unsightly and disgusting.
Therefore, to eradicate this, my organization has now set up a task force within Freetown to advocate against the keeping of huge pile of filth and debris, especially within Aberdeen which is where I live. This task force will have as a mandate, engaging the media and stakeholders responsible for the garbage collections on the dangers associated with unhealthy lifestyle as this present one.
On Monday 16th September, 2013 I will be at the National Television Station, SLBC to elaborate on some of the mechanisms to be implemented. On Wednesday, my organization will start a school tour within Freetown to ensure that establish school clubs to speak against the prevalence of Waste in our various communities. We will advocate to the authorities concern about some of the major concerns associated with waste and try in our own way to incorporate other youths in the ?campaign against filth in Freetown?.
