World Wildlife Day

by Kushal Naharki | 03-03-2019 13:58 recommendations 0

March 3 is the World Wildlife Day. As climate change worsens, huge impacts on biodiversity have been brought in, adding more issues aside from overexploitation and loss of habitat, to many vulnerable biodiversity points around the world, and only through cooperation, abiding anti-poaching laws and education that we can contribute on protecting and preserving our local wildlife and their respective habitats.

On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 3 March, the day of signature of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world¡¯s wild animals and plants. The UNGA resolution also designated the CITES Secretariat as the facilitator for the global observance of this special day for wildlife on the UN calendar. World Wildlife Day has now become the most important global annual event dedicated to wildlife.

The World Wildlife Day 2019 aligns closely with the Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Life below water, which focuses on marine species, and will be an opportunity to highlight the critical issues and values of marine wildlife to our everyday lives. The occasion will also celebrate successful initiatives to conserve and sustainably manage these species, and to scale up support for future initiatives.

    Hello Kushal,

Thanks for sharing great information and reminding fellow ambassadors of this remarkable day. Climate change has brought a lot of negative impacts on the earth and threatening wild animals' habitats is definitely one of the biggest issues. It would be very meaningful if you
research on other ways that we can do to save wild animals!

    Truly yours,
    Wonhee Kim
