Vermi Composting In Nepal

Vermicomposting has been very much effective organic manure in different parts of the world. It has slowly gained popularity in Nepal as well. Actually,Vermicomposting is a simple composting process that takes advantage of what earthworms do naturally, but confines the worms to bins making it easier for farmers to feed them and to harvest their nutrient-rich compost. It  is a simple technology that takes advantage of this to convert biodegradable waste into organic manure with the help of earthworms (the red worm Eisenia foetida) with no pile turning, no smell, and fast production of compost so it do not have any disadvantages.

In the year 1996 A.D Vermicomposting was introduced in Nepal. Then it started gaining its pace for its popularity. At first it was confined only to the research and study, but now a days it has been commercialized slowly. As, under ideal conditions, 1,000 earthworms can covert 45 kg of wet biomass per week into about 25 kg of vermicompost, so people started to produced it in a small scale at first but people gradually commercialized it. A major improvement took place when it was included in the environmental curriculum of Masters Level. Various surveys and research started taking place. Also different NGOs were formed for its promotion. Even the INGOs like ICIMOD, and WCN (Wildlife conservation Nepal) helped to promote it.

Nowadays the environment student are also in its promotion. Firstly they practice it in a small scale and after it they commercialized by selling the earthworms. The current piece of 1000 such worms is 10$. Many people nowadays are practicing it in their farming and they are benefited a lot from it. People mostly in the capital city Kathmandu and its surrounding area are more aware of it and many INGOs focus their program on these region. Even the local governmental body are actively involved in it.

Though it has not been able to replace the inorganic manure completely, it has been able to prove effective in different parts of the country and I hope that in the near days to come it will be promoted in the whole nation.

thank you for sharing this informative article Sabin. It actually great technology I have been doing at my house and I do not feel that I am putting any extra effort to get the compost. Well I think WCN is also promoting it in schools, I was involved in WCN program to promote vermi composting at Shuvatara School Sanepa, it was great to see the kids learning and accepting the technology. hopefully it will reach all over the country very soon

I wish the Vermicomposting becomes the powerful alternative to chemical toxic fertilizers.
