Feature Free Report：Taiwan Biodiversity |

The island of Taiwan is based on a data-based approach to the social issues of biodiversity. According to the literature, Taiwan's land area only accounts for 0.0277% of the world, and the number of species is as high as 3.8%, which is 150 times the global average. In addition, there are many types of marine life, about 1/10 of the world, which is 361 times the average. In terms of plant resources, there are more than 4,000 species of vascular plants, about 1,500 species of bryophytes, and 5,000 species of fungi. There are about 140,000 species of animal resources estimated. About 70 species of mammals have been found, about 500 species of birds, nearly 100 species of reptiles, and about 2,500 species of fish. There are 18,000 species of insects. Biological species are increasing due to investigations. Therefore, Taiwan has such a unique environment, so promoting biodiversity is an indispensable sustainable development of Taiwan. So what do we have to do to allow Taiwan’s biodiversity to survive? This is the social issue that Taiwan itself needs to think about, and on this issue, the government has a similar bill. In the past, in order to promote the biodiversity of Taiwan, the Agricultural Committee of the Executive Yuan completed the national report on biodiversity in Taiwan on February 15, 2000 and submitted it to the Executive Council for sustainability review. The Biodiversity Promotion Program was also proposed in the Biodiversity Working Group of the Executive Yuan Permanent Session on August 15, 2001, and was subsequently implemented in government agencies. This program is aimed at five issues facing Taiwan's biodiversity, including the lack of integration of national mechanisms for biodiversity, loose management structures, inefficient integration of research and information, inadequate education and popular participation, and weak links to work. Promote biodiversity priorities and protect biodiversity so that natural resources can be used sustainably. Subsequently, Taiwan launched a biodiversity database to serve as a basis for monitoring conservation organisms. From the Biodiversity Database, we can protect the biological areas covered by the Taiwan Protected Area System: 22 natural reserves, 6 nature reserves, 20 wild animal reserves, 37 important habitats for wildlife, and national parks. There are a total of 95 national natural parks, with a total area of 1,133,490 hectares, of which 694,503 hectares of land area, accounting for 19.19% of Taiwan's land area. And promote the Central Mountain Conservation Corridor and Tainan Guantian Shuiyu Rehabilitation. As for the ocean, because of the abundant resources of the ocean currents in Taiwan, there are about 80 species of cetaceans in the world, and more than one-third of the cetaceans can be seen in Taiwan. Therefore, the Forest Service Bureau established the China Whale Dolphin Stranding Organization Network in 1997, combined with the local government, the Coast Guard Department, the Fire Department, the Republic of China Search and Rescue Corps, civil conservation groups, academic research units, museums and enthusiastic volunteers, etc. Whale and dolphins rescue training. In addition, the turtle rescue policy was implemented. In 2013, the Turtle Notification and Rescue Platform was formed with the county and city government, the National Museum of Marine Biology and the National Taiwan Ocean University, and the turtles were rescued and sheltered in a north-south division. In recent years, the survival rate of sea turtle rescue has been improved. Finally, the websites of the biodiversity database are Taiwan Biodiversity Information Network (TaiBIF), Taiwan Species List (TaiCOL) and Taiwan Life Encyclopedia (TaiEOL). Thank you for your detailed and informative report on biodiversity in Taiwan and efforts of environmental organizations and governments to preserve the biodiversity. Due to its unique geographical features, Taiwan is known as a home to a wide variety of animals and plants. It is good to hear that a lot of people in Taiwan have recognized the value of marine creatures and are taking actions to save them. Keep up the good work. : )

Thank you for telling us about the specific steps taken by Taiwanese government in order to mitigate this issue.
The turtle rescue policy seems like a really good idea and I'm happy to see that it has actually worked.
What also sounds good is the fact that, with regards to the fact hat Taiwan is rich in diversity, the government is taking actions to resolve the matter and to preserve the varity of species.

Thank you for letting us know about Taiwan's biodiversity. It is great to know that Taiwanese government is doing some great works including biodiversity database and Biodiversity Promotion Program within its country. I strongly believe that the government's efforts will eventually pay off in the future and I hope this will become a great model for other countries to consider. Great work!

Taiwan has been establishing quite a number of projects, platforms and networks to ensure that their species are conserved. And I truely think that these structures that Taiwan has put in place will ensure that there isn't anymore an extinction of their species.
