Tanzania Bans Plastic Bags |
---|
by Yvonne Wabai | 29-05-2019 03:50 1 |
Plastic bags will be illegal in Tanzania from June 2019. The new laws put fines and jail terms for anyone who imports, exports, manufactures, sells, stores, distributes, supplies, and uses plastic bags and plastic wrappings of any thickness. Plastic bags are a big contributor to pollution and Tanzania joins the 60 countries who have measures banning and controlling plastic bags. As of 2018, about 380 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide each year. From the 1950s up to 2018, an estimated 6.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced worldwide. An estimated 9% of this waste has been recycled and another 12% has been incinerated. The rest of the waste ends up in landfills and waterways, contaminating the soil and water bodies. These plastics are non-biodegradable. Bangladesh was the first country to introduce a total ban on plastics which it did in 2002. Since then, China, Israel, South Africa, Netherlands, Morocco, Kenya, Rwanda, Mauritania, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Albania and Georgia have since implemented similar bans. Kenya was particularly lauded for imposing the world harshest plastic bag ban in the world where punishment for carrying plastics bags includes heavy penalties and jail terms and manufacturing and importing plastic bags attract penalties ranging between $19,000 and $38,000 and jail terms of up to 4 years. |

Hi Yvonne,
Thank you for writing this report. It is great to hear that it is illegal to have plastic bags in Tanzania and in Bangladesh. Plastic bags are especially troublesome because it has massive impact on environment, and it takes a long time to decompose. Plastic bags should be banned as soon as possible globally so as to protect our beautiful environment. Let's all participate in banning plastics bags in our country. Good work.

Hello Yvonne
Thank you for letting us know about the ban on plastic bags in Tanzania. Yes, plastic, especially plastic bags have been the biggest culprit of soil and water pollution. As most kinds of plastics are non- biodegradable, they have been piled up in landfills or abandoned in the ocean, subsequently harming marine animals as well. I think this is a great initiative from the government to ban the plastics and start stringent regulations. Thanks for sharing your report and keep up the good work!

Hi Yvonne,
I hope you are well.
I would like to congratulate Tanzania for putting forth a ban on plastics! It, like many other countires, are setting an example for the other countries to put an end to plastic pollution. Yes, it is disappointing to note that only a small percentage of plastic is recycled, and that the mass difference is left to litter our streets, oceans and other ecosystems.
I hope with this light of good news, the crack down of plastic pollution with strengthen AND persevere.
Thank you for reporting such a well written and giving us the good news Yvonne!
Sincerely yours,
Rosa
