Floating Hospital in Bangladesh

by Sumit Chowdhury | 15-06-2019 15:38 recommendations 1

The islands known as chars in Bangladesh are constantly changing shape as they erode and reform, a process that is quickening as a result of more extreme rainfall associated with climate change. The erosion makes survival difficult for their residents mostly poor farmers and discourages building of permanent hospitals, researchers say. But floating hospital ships, run by a non-governmental organization and equipped with medical facilities and doctors, now provide free treatment in the chars - a system that might be a model for other nations hit by worsening climate threats. Without the ship, the char's residents must hire a boat and endure a day-long journey to the nearest town hospital. They had to spend a lot of time and money to arrange a simple doctor's visit. It discourages them. That's why many residents visit hospitals only when the disease or pain becomes really bad. That is very dangerous. The NGO currently runs two ships and is in the process of building five more floating hospitals with the help of the King Abdullah Foundation, an organization started by the former Saudi monarch. After five years, the new ships will be handed over to the Bangladesh government, which believes Friendship's method of reaching people in remote areas needs to expand.

    Hi Sumit,

Thank you for writing this report and I think the idea of floating hospital is great because there are many places that are only approachable by ships. So I think more population can enjoy the health benefits now. Also this ship can be effectively used when there is flood in the city. This is a great example of how we adapt to the climate change although it is sad that climate change is happening pretty dramatically.

    Hey there Sumit!

Wow, I am indeed amazed at the work brought forth by the NGO! It is such an necessity for people to receive health care and it's truely unfortunate that not everyone has direct access to that.

This Friendship project is a true game changer and i would like to see an updated report on the 5 extra ships that will be commissioned soon!

Thank you so much for reporting Sumit, this was a refreshing report to read, one with chnage written all over it!

    With gratitude,
    Rosa

    Hello Sumit

Thank you for sharing your report on gloating hospital! Severe natural disasters resulted from climate changes have destroyed residences and reduced provision of essential health cares in many countries. In these cases, floating hospitals seem to be a wonderful initiative. Keep up the good work!

    Hello Sumit

Thank you for your report about the floating hospital. The climate change has left the serious issues all over the world and the people residing near the sea are facing the major impact of growing global warming and climate change with the increase in the sea level and hampering the normal living of the people. Glad to hear about the NGOs constructing more floating hospitals. We must learn to adapt to the changing climate and carryout the mitigating measures.

    Green Cheers from Nepal :)
    Keep writing great reports.
We are eager to read more reports from you.

    Sincerely,
    Kushal Naharki
