Sustainable Development and its environment: part 2

by Nikolay Dagaev | 13-07-2019 19:01 recommendations 0

In the first part of my article, I began to talk about how tourism can contribute directly or indirectly to the achievement of all sdgs. In the second part of the article I will continue my reasoning.

A striking example of the partnership for the SDGs (SDG 17) is the unique UNWTO programme to revive the legend of the Silk road "as one of the most culturally attractive tourist destinations in the world".

The main objective of the Program is to promote the strengthening, competitiveness and development of sustainable tourism along the Silk road, while creating a variety of opportunities for international cooperation.
33
states along the Silk road and private tourism stakeholders are working intensively to create new tourism opportunities and initiatives that contribute to sustainable development in areas of mutual interest.

Indeed, tourism can contribute to the implementation of all 17 SDGs and help to combat poverty, gender inequality, climate change, as well as address the lack of resources in the least developed countries. In addition, tourism can also play an important role in strengthening and financing the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, as well as in promoting the socio-economic development of tourist destinations.
The development of sustainable tourism requires both informed participation of all relevant stakeholders and strong political leadership in order to increase participation and reach agreement.
With proper management, tourism development will benefit not only the country as a whole, but also individual regions and local communities.
"Tourism is a sector of hope ", - said Taleb Rifai, the Secretary – General of the world tourism organization, in his introduction to the 2016 UNWTO report.

Tourism sector provide an opportunity for every traveler and everyone involved in tourism to contribute to a more responsible, sustainable and inclusive future for all.

I am sure that at the near future we will think about the contribution of our trip to the economic development of the visited countries, cities and villages, the solution of social development and environmental protection.

So, every tourist can become part of the overall movement for a sustainable future. Do travel for the personal growth and well-being of the planet!

    Hi Nikolay,

Thank you for the PART II report on sustainable development, and your report on how the tourism can potentially contribute to SDGs are impressive. I do agree to your point that tourism can help us to mitigate the poverty as the economy of the region will get better, yet we should not neglect the environment as well. I am excited to see how tourism and sustainable development will work together to achieve the common goal.

    Hello Nikolay

Thank you for sharing your report on how tourism can contribute to achieving all 17 SDGs. It is widely known that properly managed tourism can help combat poverty but the idea that tourism can combat climate change is very new to me. To make it happen, we must make sure that funding for environmental issues is secured. Keep up the good work! : )

Thank you for this article which shows a new angle to The new Silk Road- I have mostly read about it from the geo-political angle, but it can be used to tourism too. However, proper management is critical, because increased tourism will naturally lead to concerns on how to preserve the natural and cultural environment of these very special heritage sites.
