Taiwan prepares for its plastic straw ban

Hi everyone! My name is Lisa Zaretskaya. I would like to draw your attention to my report related to the topic: Taiwan prepares for its plastic straw ban.

Everyone knows that plastic products kill all living things. Many countries prohibit the use of plastic utensils, bags and other things made of plastic. Taiwan also tries to use plastic as little as possible. For example, Taiwan is currently preparing to join a growing number of places across the world implementing bans on single-use plastic straws. The policy, announced in May, comes into effect today. The first stage of the ban will apply to some 8,000 government offices, schools, department stores, shopping malls, and fast-food chains for people dining in. Repeat violators will be fined as much as NT$6,000 ($190). The government hopes to totally phase out plastic straws by 2030. Taiwan¡¯s Environmental Protection Administration said that the ban¡¯s gradual roll-out is aimed at getting dine-in customers to get into the habit of not using plastic straws so that they do away with them altogether in future. An official from the agency estimated that Taiwanese go through 3 billion plastic straws a year. This is a huge amount!
Plastics, and in particular plastic straws, have come under increased scrutiny for polluting oceans, clogging landfills, and worsening greenhouse-gas emissions, although straws make up only a tiny proportion of the total plastic waste generated worldwide. One company in Taiwan has already developed a reusable cup made from recycled glass that houses a separate compartment inside for the pearls, allowing the user to get the right proportions, plastic free. Float, the company behind the product, said that it would be available at the end of the year.

Thank you for your attention.

    Hi Lisa,

Thank you for sharing this report with us and I personally think the picture looks a bit scary, but I do think this picture has done an amazing job in conveying the importance of banning plastic straws. In Korea, to date most cafes stopped giving plastic straws to the customers due to environmnetal issues. I am looking forward to see how Taiwan will implement its own NO PLASTICS policy! Keep up with the good work.

    Hey 'Liza!

I hope you are well! Well done to Taiwan for the implementation of banning the use of plastics! Especially that of straws and other single-use plastic items!

Plastic does indeed clogg up out drainage, and fill up our oceans making them dangerous for our oceanic creatures.

Thank you so much for this wonderful news! Please continue with this good work! Thank you!

    With gratitude

    Hello Lisa

Thank you for letting us know about the news that Taiwan prepares for its plastic straw ban. Even though plastic straw accounts for small portion of whole plastic waste, they can seriously threat marine animal's lives. In Korea, many people have started to use glass or metal straw but government policy has not been made. Please keep us updated with this issue! : )
