[THEMATIC] SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

by Ananya Singh | 31-07-2019 23:08 recommendations 0

The United Nations defines Sustainable Development as the kind of Development that takes place when we meet the needs of the present generation without compromising with the ability of our posterity to meet theirs. Now we all definitely talk a lot about sustainable development but without "actually" doing anything concrete to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) laid down by the UN. There are 17 SDGs which the UN wants the world to meet by 2030.

But since, we're an environment platform, I'll try to specifically focus on the goals that cluster around Environment -

  • GOAL 13 : CLIMATE ACTION - this calls all of us to take immediate action to combat the ramifications of climate change as a phenomenon. It encourages all the nations and people to adopt mechanisms for effective planning and efficient management of climate change related issues to mitigate its adverse impacts on life on earth as soon as possible. It asks the national governments and civil society to raise their institutional capacity to educate and aware people about the issue with adaptation techniques and early warnings.
  • GOAL 12 : ENSURE SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION PATTERNS - This Goal looks forward to reduce global food wastage alongside the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources, and environmentally sound management of chemicals & wastes to protect the environment.
  • GOAL 11 : SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES - It aims to make cities and human settlements clean, safe, resilient, sustainable, and green by 2030.
  • GOAL 14 : LIFE BELOW WATER - It aims to motivate people to reduce marine pollution of all kinds while also managing nutritional levels for marine life by the year 2030. It looks forward to not only protect marine life but also make them resilient and immune to adversities by minimizing ocean acidification, overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices.
  • GOAL 15 : LIFE ON LAND - It aims at the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and fresh water ecosystems. It aims to combat desertification and land degradation, and halt habitat loss.
These are the ways in which the UN has set milestones for us to achieve by the year 2030. I hope all of us will try our best to accomplish these goals in the next 11 years !!!

    Hello Ananya

Thank you for your well-organized report on sustainable development goals related to environments. These goals provide concrete objectives to all the governments, corporates and individuals. It would be great if you search on specific policies or regulations that are implemented by your country or what you have been doing to achieve these goals.
