Thematic Report - Youth and the Environment

by Sainath Manikandan | 12-09-2019 19:53 recommendations 0

Youth are playing a major role at present by taking various initiatives like arranging for awareness events and sharing their best practices in their neighborhood, families and community on how to preserve, conserve our natural resources and protect the planet.

We see that the number of youth involved in collectively raising their voices to lead and raise awareness campaigns have increased over the years. Many of them are involved in finding solutions to the environmental issues by innovating and using advanced technologies.

Youth of today can try to arrange for various initiatives within their community for raising awareness. After which they can try to reach out to the country¡¯s national leaders to bring about a change in their policy. Youth are ready to take lead and engage themselves in meaningful ways to protect the environment. More details regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) need to reach the community, as they will take measures to heal the planet.

UN Environment had recognized 7 young people from all over the world. They are recognized as ¡°Young Champions of the Earth¡±. Let me just give a brief summary of these 7 winning entries.

Miao Wang¡¯s initiative ¡°Better Blue¡± aims at marine conservation. She gives presentations and programs to educate others about its importance.

Innovative land based system of coral farms was launched by Gator Halpern.

Evocco is a smartphone app used to calculate a person¡¯s ecological footprint by scanning their shopping receipts. This was designed by High Weldon.

Miranda Wang¡¯s Bio collection Company uses the latest chemical recycling technology and produces new products from recyclables or the first time.

Shady Rabab encourages and teaches garbage-collecting children to make musical instruments from trash.

Arpit Dhupar¡¯s unique technique filters most of the particulate matter from diesel generator. Instead of throwing out the matter, the carbon is turned into ink pigment that can be used for printing.

Heba Al Farra started Women in Energy and Environment initiative aims to support females in engineering and environmental professions. They provide support and train them on technical skills.

Now let me share my initiatives to heal the environment and love the planet.

1.      I have launched my own campaign called PEPC and collecting papers, electronic wastes, plastics and cans for recycling.

2.      I give presentations to my friends and schoolmates regarding the importance of recycling.

3.      I conduct workshops regarding the various measures that can be taken by youth to preserve our natural resources.

4.      I arrange for cleanup campaigns and tree planting events.

5.      I write articles in magazines and on social medias to involve more and more youth to work towards preserving the earth.

    Hi Sainath,

Very wonderful to read more expressly about the selected 7 Champions by UN and their potential contributions to conserving the environment.

Very importantly, you have also showcased your active involvement in this matter. Yes, personal involvement with practical ways is highly advised. I hope you are really getting results from these your ideas.

Think Globally, Act Locally. Your report is really motivating I must confess.

Hope to hear more from you.
