Plastic Waste Littering |

Plastic waste issue still remain a problem in various parts of Kenya even though the issues has attracted widespread concern and attention, particularly in the last three years due to the widespread littering throughout the country. The rapid rate of urbanization and resettlement throughout the world has led to the generation of increasing amounts of wastes, including plastic wastes and e-wastes and this in turn poses difficulty in disposal. The problem is more acute in developing countries such as Kenya. There are large amounts of plastic wastes and plastic bags littered all over in Kenyan markets and within various higher learning institutions. This has led to environmental pollution, particularly degradation of water streams and blockage of drainage systems especially in public institutions and towns. There is need for effective implementation of current policies on plastic waste management, particularly plastic bags and plastic bottles. Plastic bags and bottles contribute immensely and intensively to the littering and pose a serious problem of disposal. A few policies exist in Kenya that address the acute problem of waste management. The weaknesses and gaps of the existing policies need to be reviewed and development of an efficient policy approach initiated. Waste management policies in Kenya have for a long time been unclear because of lack of clear methodologies of collection, treatment and disposal of wastes. There is need for a serious intervention to address re-emerging cases of plastic waste littering in Kenya particularly in Maseno market and its environs.

Hello Okoth, thanks for the detailed report about the situation in Kenya.
Through the pictures you posted, I can see how serious it is.
Waste issue is one of the major problems in many countries since it can lead to another severe problems such as air, water pollution.
Obviously there are some actions government can take, but the more important thing is the citizen's awareness of this problem.
I hope the situation in Kenya get better before it's too late.

The problem of plastic waste is widespread. As I understand from your report, there are several strategies in Kenya to address the acute problem of waste management. You are absolutely right when you say that it is necessary to analyse the weaknesses and gaps in existing policies and to start developing an effective policy approach.

Hi Okoth Okoth,
The poor waste management is a global issue and the daily increase of this really call for immediate attention.
Actually, as long as waste management is concern, formulation of policies will not go far if implementation and execution. Of such policies are not intensively planned and that your report has highlighted.
I hope that the Kenyan government can review their existing policies on waste matters and be on the top gear for its implementation.

Plastic is a great problem that Korea also shares with your country as do other countries.
For Korea, the situation seems less serious because there are more policies and institutions well set regarding the issue. The management system and the recycling is well institutionalized and so visually it seems okay. Yet, the amount of plastic waste is increasing every year, and the recycling job is not being done well as expected.
I believe that the problem in my country is people's lack of awareness and a weak sense of responsibility. People believe that it's okay for 'them' to still use plastic while they do know that plastics are causing some severe problems to the environment.
To deal with this environmental disaster, all of us, every individual should work together. It's wrong to expect others to act and care while they themselves don't.
That's why I believe that educating people is as important as devising an efficient and smart policy to tackle the environmental problem.
You and I could do that can't we?
By writing articles such as yours, and telling people, our community of environmental issue, we can all contribute to the enhancement of climate/environmental literacy!
Let's keep up the green work.
