Making Our Soak Pit

Water scarcity is an important and immediate concern in populous urban Environments today. To address this issue students from our group are taking steps to help recharge and replenish the groundwater table by building soak pit (leach pit). Soak pit helps to capture rainwater and allow water to slowly soak in to the ground. So we have decided to start constructing the soak pit from our school surrounding only. After we took this step we have moved to various places in our city and made soak pits at Schools, Colleges, & also some Homes.

Subject:

In our school play ground there is one Hand Pump which is used for Drinking Water Purpose by the students. But as the students used this Drinking Water Source a lot of water was flown into the drain or it got stagnated and made an Unhealthy surrounding. We have made a Soak pit there so the amount of water wasted in our school can be conserved in good extent. We have linked all the waste water sources to the Soak Pit so that no water is wasted & this helps in recharging the table water level of our school surroundings.

 Project objectives-

1.)     make such a Soak Pit this will be helpful in conserving water. 2.)It will be helpful in conserving waste water. 3.) To make such a Soak Pit that is very cheap but Effective. 4.) To teach the students how they can conserve the waste water in their houses very easily. 5. )To utilize the rain water in a proper way. This can increase the level of Table Water.  6.) With the help of students to design & manipulate such a Soak Pit which is very effective and economic. 7.)     To make the students more Aware & Responsible.

Project research:

•             Making survey on the Different Types of Soak Pits through self Observation or Via Internet. •    Making groups among students and discussing about the different ways on how we can modify the Soak Pit and how we can increase its efficiency for soaking water. •   Many places in our country were facing water crisis in our country so the Soak Pit was a big necessity all over our Country. •               In our Country each school is supposed to have a Tube well within their campus which is made by the Government Authorities itself. But due to the continuous wastage of water the water sources were losing their existence & were drying up. So if a Soak Pit would be constructed there it would surely help in regenerating the source of water. •  We have observed 478 schools in our Education Block (Near & Around our city) out of which we found that 240 school?s water source had lost their existence due to the decrease in Table Water Level there.

Project action plan:

  1. Discussing on the various Factors of the Soak Pit like: Size, place etc 2. )Getting the Volunteers for making the Soak Pit 3.) Making Soak Pit?s at various places in the city (Especially where the Table Water Level is low) 4. )Educating the people, Especially Students about the Construction & Benefits of the Modified Soak Pit.
  2. METHOD FOR CONSTRUCTION: According to these points we can make the soak pit in given way:- 1.  Make a soak pit in that place where water is wasted or table water level is low. 2.       The length, breadth and height of soak pit should be 1m x 1m x 1m. 3.         In the middle portion of this pit make a hole of 6 inch diameter. 4.            Now fill this hole with small crushed pieces of soft bricks. 5. Now fill 1/4th part by 5 inch x 6 inch size of crushed bricks and then 1/4th part by 4 inch x 5 inch size of crushed bricks. 6. Now rest 1/4th part is filled with pebbles (2 inch x 2 inch size). 7. Now form a thick layer of sand of 6 inch. 8. Take an earthen pot or a box made up of plastic, make a small hole in the bottom of the pot, then fill the pot with jute strings which will be helpful in separating the solid waste particles and it will be convenient to clean it. 9.     Now out flowing drain is connected to pot so that waste water will directly come in it. 10.  Now cover the soak pit with the help of jute sack. 11.     Now pour mud over the sack and fill the hole with the bricks. 12.        At last our soak pit is ready.

Project results so far:

•Now daily this hole soaks approx. 200 lit. Of waste water in 5 to 6 years. •After we successfully constructed the ?Perfect Soak Pit? at our school we have been making Soak Pits in different parts of our city. •     Presently we have made the Soak Pits in 240 Schools of our city. These Soak Pits were made free of cost for the schools & are now helping them to recharge their Table Water Level.
