Agro Biodiversity Research |

BIODIVERSITY refers to the variety of life, and includes all living things (plants, animals and micro-organisms) and their unique characteristics. Biodiversity is not evenly distributed in earth and shows spatial and temporal variation. Distribution of life depends on temperature, precipitation, altitude, Soil properties, geography and the presence of other species. Agricultural biodiversity is indeed fundamental for resilience and adaptation to change. The variety and variability of animals, plants and micro-organisms that are used directly or indirectly for food and agriculture, including crops, livestock, forestry and fisheries. It comprises the diversity of genetic resources (varieties, breeds) and species used for food, fodder, fibre, fuel and pharmaceuticals. It also includes the diversity of non-harvested species that support production (soil micro-organisms, predators, pollinators), and those in the wider environment that support agro-ecosystems (agricultural, pastoral, forest and aquatic) as well as the diversity of the agro-ecosystems.(FAO,1999) Agrobiodiversity Includes: Ø The diversity of genetic resources(varieties, breeds, whether cultivated, reared or wild) used directly or indirectly for food and agriculture; Ø The diversity of species that support production (soil biota, pollinators, predators, etc.) and those in the wider environment that support agroecosystems (agricultural, pastoral, forest and aquatic) Ø The diversity of the agroecosystems themselves. As an undergraduate student of Agriculture, We are conducting the research on the more than 40 Landraces of Indigenous varieties of rice of Lamjung and Tanahun District at IAAS Lamjung, Lamjung District. |

I've never heard about the word Agro biodiversity, and it seems like a very important concept in eco system.
