Eco Fact 5: Food Wastage

by Kushal Naharki | 05-10-2019 22:56 recommendations 0

Presenting you the 5th Eco Fact of the series about Food Wastage.

1.3 billion tons of food are wasted every year. 8% of greenhouse gases heating the planet are caused by food waste. Eliminating global food waste would save 4.4 million tonnes of C02 a year, the equivalent of taking one in four cars off the road. If food waste was a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases after USA and China.

Food Wastage During Festival

Festival seasons have began in Nepal with Dashain, Tihar and Chhat festival already knocking the doors. Large amount of food is wasted during this festivals.

Nepal is a food deficit land locked and least developed country, having a population of more than 27 million people. Around 31 percent people in the country live below poverty level. Around 49.3 percent of under-five children are chronically malnourished. Globally, Nepal ranks 145th out of 182 countries in terms of its Human Development Index (UNDP, 2009).

Although large amount of food is wasted during festivals, there are large portion of people who are celebrating these festivals empty stomach and large hungry animals roaming on streets . People must be conscious and make best utilization of food without wasting because large amount of money, energy and resources have been invested on the food from farmers in the field, manufacturing company to the people cooking it at home.

There's a lot we can do to reduce the food waste that's costing our families, depleting our natural resources, and contributing to climate change.

1.Plan ahead—before meals, especially large meals at the holidays, plan out how much food you and your guests need and stock up accordingly.

2.Donate whatever you can¡¯t use to the people and animals who need this.

3.Store your leftovers safely.

4.Compost your food scraps instead of simply throwing them out.

5. Implementing policy relating to food waste and food security

This festival season, let's commit to reducing food waste so we can help feed the hungry, fight climate change, and save money. Lets make a contribution towards Sustainable Goal No. 2 Zero Hunger and Goal No. 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

    Hi Kushal!

I've been waiting for the Eco Facts series! I think they are very informative and interesting.

I knew that food waste is one of the environmental problems, but I never knew that it is this much serious.
Dealing with this problem, bottom to top approach seems to be working effectively where people control their amount of daily meals so no food waste is created.

    Thanks for the informative report!
I look forward to see next Eco Facts series!

It is so ridiculous to see this condition. Food wastage is really one of the major problem that everyone is facing. People are not concerned about this fact that for the green house emission there is the active role of the food waste.
