Eco Fact 7: Ozone Layer Depeltion

by Kushal Naharki | 31-10-2019 21:34 recommendations 0

Presenting you the 7th Eco Fact of the Series on the Ozone Layer Depletion:

Ozone layer is recovering, projecting that it would heal completely in the Northern Hemisphere by the 2030s, Southern Hemisphere in the 2050s and polar regions by 2060.

Ozone in the upper layers of the atmosphere protects the earth¡¯s surface from most of the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. Human activity has damaged this protective layer of the stratosphere and while ozone layer health has improved, there's still much to be done. Ozone (O3) is a highly reactive gas whose molecules are comprised of three oxygen atoms. One atom of chlorine can destroy more than 100,000 ozone molecules.

An international treaty was signed to protect the ozone layer. This treaty was named the Montreal Protocol. Under the treaty, nations agreed to phase out the production and use of these ozone-depleting substances, which also contribute to global warming. Every year, on 16th September, World Ozone Day is celebrated to spread the awareness of ozone depletion and to look for a solution on how to preserve it. Recovery from the holes and thinning caused by aerosol chemicals has progressed at a rate of about 1% to 3% a decade since 2000, meaning the ozone layer over the northern hemisphere and mid-latitudes should heal completely by the 2030s, if current rates are sustained.

    Hello Kushal

Good to see another Eco Fact serious.
It is really fortunate that there is some progress with the ozone layer. Global warming isn't a phenomenon of which effects can be observed day by day, but it is clearly a very severe event that has to be treated with all kind of efforts. I hope more and more nations and organizations put their effort in resolving this environmental issue.

Thank you for the 7th Eco Facts series.

I'm looking forward to read the next one.
