FOOD AND ENVIRONMENT

by Israel Adeoye | 06-01-2020 07:25 recommendations 0

With the growing global population and the increasing demand for agricultural output in order to meet up with the demand, it is no news that this is affecting the environment and the ecosystem.

To increase food production, farmers have employ the use of chemicals such as herbicides-to get rid of weeds which compete for space and nutrients with the planted crops, pesticides-to kill pests and predators, and fertilizers-to increase productivity. Despites the genuine reasons behind the use of these chemical substances on farmlands (to enhance productivity to meet up with the increasing food demand), the excessive and uncontrolled application of these substances have greatly affect the environment and interrupted the ecosystem.

The use of these chemicals have not only endangered aquatic life when washed into the water bodies, but has also killed soil microbes.

The search for food which led to animal hunting has decreased the number of wildlife and left some species endangered as a result of excessive killings. Since man now compete with predators for their prey, predators are left with nothing to eat than to go for the available ones. And where there is none, the predator dies, exposing such specie to extinction.

It is also important to note that the search for ways to preserving foods and beverages have led to the production of plastics and cans which are the major cause of pollution - both water and land.

Therefore food production, processing and storage have seriously contributed to environmental pollution and the possibility of it increasing calls for immediate attention.

However, as man can not survive without food, it is necessary to note that food production and attempt to increase food production to meet global demand is not in itself condemnable, but the failure to balance the process with the environment.

It is therefore necessary for environmentalists  to be involve in this process in order to put the environment into consideration even as we strive for adequate food production.

    Hello Isarel,
    this is your mentor Lisa.

There are indeed some serious problems that have a detrimental effect on our environment involving in food production. Especially the massive amount of demand for meat is leading to a violation of animal rights and the development of GMO which not only is harmful to our own health but also our earth. Not only that, some plants that are consumed actively in modern days like avocados, is causing major environmental harm and yet, they are still produced worldwide just because they sell well.

I think it's time that we follow our head, instead of our tongue when we think about what we eat.

    Thanks for your report!
    Nice work:)

    Hello Israel

You listed some of the serious effects from the food production. I truly agree on them some effective measures should be taken.
As food is one of the most frequent way of interacting with the surrounding environment, process of making food should be formed in productive but eco-friendly ways. I think some technological improvements and effective policies can be the solution to the problem.

Thank you for the great report.
