Vermicomposting is the process of converting organic material into a humus like material by the use of worms. Not all the type of earth worm can be used for vermicomposting. The best types of worms for vermicomposting are red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) and redworms (Lumbricus rebellus). These two worms make the great worm for the compost bin because they prefer a compost environment to plain soil, and they are very easy to keep. Worms that feed on vegetables waste, compost, and organic bedding produce richer casting than those feed on the plain soil. There are the various benefits of the vermicomposting than any other. Earthworms are mainly used for this purpose, Thus earthworms are also called as friends of farmers. Vermicomposting is superior to other composting as composting has the thermophilic phase which ensures material sanitation where as vermicomposting takes place at an ambient temperature. It is an eco friendly way of converting organic material into a humus. Vermicompost enriches the soil, creates an ecologically safe system of food production, and raises land productivity. By the use of vermicompost in gardens, harmful chemicals and pesticides are no longer needed in the cultivation of crops, because of the chemical nature of the vermicompost which is essentially a lignin complex with ion exchange and adsorption properties, nutrients are tenaciously held and made available slowly throughout the life of the plant. It helps in the fixation of organic carbon in soil there by reducing atmospheric carbon responsible for global warming. As I am the Board member of the organization (Youth Endeavour for Sustainable Agriculture) and we organized various programme on the occasion of the world soil day, among which Vermi composting was one. We called farmers from the village to our collage in order to reduce the gap between farmer and agriculturist, and trained them about the process of vermicomposting, I was demonstrator at this programme, it takes about 2-3 months for the fully preparation of the vermi, we can also collect the vermi tea, it was really a fruitful program. In additon to this, vermi composting is the one that I ever wanted to do, so with the aim learning by doing, I did it at my hostel too, I taught the procedure of preparation to my sisters who was not present at programme, I used the materials like saw dust, pseudo stem of Banana, compost, remains of vegetables, leaf, Farm Yard Manure, and now my vermi compost is on the way of preparation, it is so precious like gold so also called as ¡°Black Gold¡±. Earthworm are also replicating, it is really pleasure to see babies growing day by day. And I feel really happy and glad to be an Agriculturist, the profession directly related with the mankind and environment. |

Hello Sandhya
This is pretty interesting topic. I once heard that worms play important role in making the soil rich, and your report contains detailed information about the topic. It's really desirable that you are sharing your knowledge with the farmers, who actually take parts in agricultural industry. I'm sure those lessons will be a big help to them. And with the vermicomposting you installed in your hostel, I look forward to seeing the result in the future.
Thank you for the great report!

Hey Sandhya!
It's Lisa.
Vermicomposting!
I can see that it is one of the ways that we could make it sustainable in the agricultural processes. Although it will be a little difficult for those people that don't like earthworms haha!
As you have put, we cannot always learn by doing ourselves. In that sense, I think it's great how you tried yourself with the advice of local farmers and other people!
Love how you are always trying and challenging yourself!
Keep working:)
