What about hazardous wastes?

by Okoth Okoth | 04-02-2020 01:27 recommendations 0

The big question still remains, what about hazardous wastes? Or let's frame it this way, "what about your hazardous wastes? Many a time environmental activists and individuals fighting for a cleaner environment forget the impact of hazardous wastes to our ecosystem.

Electronics, tyres and used oil freely find their way to the ecosystem with little concern from governments. We talk about negative impacts of improper and unsanitized disposal of solid wastes to the ecosystem without talking about hazardous wastes.

Let us break them one by one:
Electronic wastes (e-waste)
Electronics such as computer monitor  contain almost 1Kg of lead which is a cancerous component. We all know the effects of lead to the unborn and grown ups including damage to the nervous system.

Used Oil
Used oil finds its way to the environment from garages, they then join municipal sewer systems to treatment plants and a higher percentage to water sources. It makes it hard to treat waste water due to its complex components. Used oil contain carbons and lead from vehicle engines thus is a threat to human and animals lives.

Tyres
Tyres are hard to treat and recycle. When burnt they produce toxic gases to the environment which is a trigger to upper respiratory tract infections. Even burning them in cement kilns is not enough to manage them.

About tyres, I have noticed diys of reusing them. They can be used as furniture by creating ottomans, and gardens, used in play grounds as swings, used decoratively by plantiong flowers in them.
All in all we need to step up and do something right with what we have.

    Hey Okoth!
    It's Lisa your mentor.

The creation of an excessive amount of waste is not the only problem that we have to resolve but managing them properly is also something that we should think about. I heard that in some of the developing nations, there are huge garbage piles nearby the poor villages and children living in those villages play in that pile of hazardous materials where they could get injured and get exposed to all these toxic materials. I was really shocked when I watched that. It's time that we take more time and energy in devising a proper way to manage these garbages!!

    Great report dear:)

    Greeting from Nepal,

You had made some of the good points here about the waste that are hazardous to both the environment and the human beings, so what we can do is just not using such a product as well as encourage other too about this,
Thanks for the informative piece of writing,

    Hello Okoth

I can see that some wastes that are easy to find are hazardous to both the environment and to humans. Maybe the best action we can take is not to buy the products that are made from hazardous materials. If that's too hard, at least we should be aware of the fact and put extra care when buying products with those materials. This report will help in sorting what wastes are really bad for the health.

Thank you for the informative report!
