What is Ecofeminism?

by Tsengelmaa Nyamdorj | 06-02-2020 22:19 recommendations 0

"Ecofeminism is an activist and academic movement that sees critical connections between the domination of nature and the exploitation of women...."
-- Lois Ann Lorentzen, University of San Francisco, and Heather Eaton, Saint Paul University (2002)

Since the origin of the term, ecofeminism had been the center of controversy and criticism, which then, slowly fused to non-existence. Nowadays, you never hear of ¡°Ecofeminism¡± at any event or meeting. However, we have to remember that it¡¯s a new term for ancient wisdom and still plays an integral part in some of our Tunza member¡¯s societies.

For instance, Mongolians practice shamanism, more particularly Tengrism-- a religion that views human existence as sustained by the eternal blue sky (Tengri) and the fertile mother-earth spirit (Eej). So, moral education in Mongolian households has always been interconnected to respecting their mother who gave them life and the mother-earth who prospered that life. More importantly, because of this particularly authentic culture, women in Mongolia were seen as an ultimate powerhouse who can give life and had almost-if-not equal rights with men. (from being able to divorce to going out in battlefields)

While in the western part of the world, ecofeminists viewed parallels between the exploitation of nature and the exploitation of women, parallels that are understood in the context of patriarchy. Meaning critics who often condemn ecofeminism as a theory that only focuses on the ¡°mystical connection¡± is simply wrong as many real-life examples stand strong as of today. It¡¯s also seen as an anti-progressive movement, but just like how most feminist movements advocate for other equal rights movements such as LGBT and youth rights-- supported by historical encounters-- ecofeminism played a huge role in redefining queer theory, vegetarianism, environmental movements, and animal liberation. All in all, ecofeminism is not a lost ideology from the past but a hidden gem that still have marks across feminist, peace, and ecological movements. So, fellow ambassadors and members of Tunza please do check out ecofeminism in your free-time.

    Hello Tsengelmaa

This is an interesting concept. Looking back to the history and searching around the world nowadays, ecofeminism is the concept that must not be overlooked. I will search for some extra information about the concept, and spread this idea in the situation when it is necessary.

Thank you for the informative report!

    Hey Tsengelmaa!
    It's Lisa your mentor.

I just first would like to appreciate you for introducing one of the most important topics in the environment yet have not been dealt with here in Tunza.
Ecofeminism is a great movement that presents the world with a new perspective on how we should live alongside nature and the woman. The long history of exploitation of nature and the oppressive patriarchy is as you have said not apart from each other. The structure of dominance resides in every part of our society and it is time that we escape these given frames to adopt a new way of thinking and a lifestyle.

Great report you have here, very insightful!
    Nice job!
