Plastic and Plants In the old days, Indonesians will use leaves as a way to wrap food. The most common leaf to be used is banana leaf. Traditional food wrapped in this leaf would be tastier. It seems that the leaves had a way in bringing out the flavor of the food. But nowadays, since food are placed in styrofoam or plastic, the flavor is just normal. The transition from using leaves to plastic in wrapping up food was due to the amount of resources at hand at the time. Leaves had to be harvested to be used, and they take time to grow. Furthermore, banana trees will die once they grow fruit for the first time or if their leaves were to be harvested. The amount of leaf available as well as its increasing price proved to be an issue, thus the option in using plastic. Everyone can agree that they are cheaper, although in later days it is clear that they cause major environmental issues. Currently, plastic is massively used in food transaction. Bans have taken place around Indonesia, so the plastic problem has lessen a bit. Innovations have been made, such as bags from cassava. If the bag is placed in hot water, it'll dissolve immediately. It's amazing how technology like this takes a part in helping the earth. But we mustn't forget that plastic is also the product of technology that had harmed the earth. So it can be said that technology has a dual blade, it can either be used to make earth a greater place or to worsen it.

I agree that the plastic was once an innovative material that is cheap and easy to make, but it is damaging the environment more than ever. Some can say that therefore technology is bad, but I believe that some other technology can make those banana leafs much easier to cultivate and make them in massive amount. If it is made possible, it can partially replace plastic wrappers and contribute in reducing the plastics wastes.

It's Lisa your mentor.

I do think it was very wise for your people to use the leaves in the past and I heard that of cours not as much as in the old days, but still, some of these tropical countries are using the leaves to wrap the food! I think it's really great since it causes no harm to the environment! Yes indeed technology is a dual blade and so we would have to use it wisely! It's not that we have to abandon all usage of plastics and start using the banana leaves for all food wrapping but we should find alternatives that are more environmentally friendly.
