WHY AM I HELPLESS?

by Meena Pandey | 02-03-2020 11:43 recommendations 0

Brick kilns is  the leading cause of air pollution in the environment. The burning of brick in the kilns doesnot only produce harmful gases like nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon mono oxide.

Brick production is a very large and traditional industry in many

parts of Asia.Iit is an established

fact that small scale industries are one of the major contributors to

atmospheric pollution in the environment. Among small scale industries,

the brick kiln industry is a booming industry as the demand for bricks is

increasing almost universally due to fast economic growth, urbanization

and prosperity. The raw materials used for brick productions are soil

clay or sediments from  river, which are rich in fine particles. Most of

the brick kilns use Assam coal, Slack coal and/or lignite which contain

high level of sulphur and high ash content (25-30%) . About 70% of

coal, 24% saw dust and remaining 6% wood and others are used as fuel

by brick kilns. Burning of this coal produces high level of sulphur

dioxide and black carbon. In certain areas low grade carbonaceous

materials such as rice husk, bagasse and wood/saw dust are also used as

a part or full replacement of coal. In India, fire clay bricks are produced

in about 42000 small and medium scale brick kilns which operate

normally using 4–5 million metric tonnes of coal each year.Production of bricks results in environmental degradations due to

emission of significant quantities of gaseous and particulate pollutants.

All the brick kiln operations right from digging of earth to unloading

of fired bricks from the kiln are accompanied by generation of dust

which leaves the whole nearby and workplace dusty. Air

pollution in brick kiln is produced both through the stack emission

as well as the fugitive emissions. Use of thermally low efficient kilns,

outdated technology such as Bull¡¯s Trench kilns and inefficient firing

technologies contributes to particulate and gaseous emissions. Brick

kilns emission consists of mainly fine particles of coal, dust particles,

organic matters and small amount of gases such as SO2, NOx, H2S,

CO etc.
The general way of brick preparation is brick shaping or moulding from clay, drying firing and Fired brick flue.
Behind the agricultural farm of Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, there is a kiln which is mostly found emitting gases and smokes. As the institute is located in the border of Nepal and India.Perhaps it is no man¡¯s land.As for the result no one is concerned and worried about it.However,it always builds my ego and drives for me to speak. But helpless me there is no one whom they listen for me to talk about.Isn¡¯t there any alternative of brick kilns???
I hope this platform adds me more encouragement to fight for it.

  • Taehyun Mentor says :
Hello Meena! Warm greetings from a new mentor, Taehyun!

Firstly, Thank you for noticing me about the problem with gas emitting brick kilns! I really didn't know about that. Your article thought me a lot! Thank you for that.

Actually, just like brick kilns, many other traditional factories that use low efficient fossil fuels are a massive problem to our nature. Nowadays, many sophisticated factories use eco-friendly energy sources for their factory, but still more factories use low-quality fuel. That is a really sad fact.

The problem you mentioned is a really serious problem, but it will very hard to solve the problem with just a person. I recommend you write an article like this to many other platforms and make people know about this serious problem. Two heads are better than one, It is true.

I hope you solve the problem! Thank you for noticing me about this problem!
    I'm rooting for you!

  • Sang Su Mentor says :
Hi, Meena Pandey, this is Sang Su mentor from South Korea.

I didn't know that producing bricks from klins emit so much green house gases that it can danger the earth's environment. Thank you for your informative article.

The last sentence is eye-catching. That's right. To be persuasive, there must be replacement of producing bricks using different sources. To do that, studying different areas of science would help you. You are students and can do anything you want in the future. Please study hard and I hope I would see you in the newspaper stating that you are the one who replaces the brick producing technology ^^.

    Cheers!
