Sir David Attenborough- A voice for nature A Legendary Eco Hero I'm sure everyone knows about David Attenborough for his nature related documentaries. However, he has been contributing selflessly to the cause of the environment for decades now. That is why he is the eco-hero that I want to present. Sir David Frederick Attenborough, an English broadcaster and nature historian, has multiple international awards and recognitions to his credit for his over 60 years of dedication towards environmentalism. He has also been honored for his work on the topics of climate change and environmental emergencies. My admiration for Sir Attenborough stems from the fact that he has devoted his life to nature, and more so as he not only personally experienced the beauty and fragility of our planet himself, but also consistently shared his knowledge with the world. He has worked on multiple audio and video series and musicals, inspiring people of all ages. To me, he is a perfect example of a visionary who turned his hobby into a public service awareness initiative that conveyed the message of eco conservation to the masses. In my opinion, what deserves immense credit is the fact that he has been an environmental activist from a time before the 'green' theme became fashionable. A true visionary, he was able to convert the subject of ecology into a mainstream interest that inspired millions to take up the cause of environmental protection. Reading about him tells me that his approach changed as the years went by. At first he took a more spectator point of view, often just admiring and observing from a distance describing what he saw and sharing his feelings with the viewers. However, as time went on and he authored his documentaries he took a more environmental stance that indicated how he became one with the subjects of his works. As I researched about him, I realised that his works are colossal and extend beyond being covered under one report. So I encourage the readers to scout the web and youtube to know more about his works and learn from them. However, I am listing below some examples that highlight his leadership role as a champion of nature and an eco hero: · State of the Planet (2000), where he was able to use modern scientific evidence and interview experts to evaluate a human beings impact on nature. · Truth about Climate Change (2006) was him talking about the issues of global warming · ‘How Many People Can Live on Earth?’, another interesting program talking about overpopulation and the human population growth. · One of his more famous works is his contribution to the BBC's ‘Saving Planet Earth’ Project in 2007 where he spoke about the situation of endangered species. This even was put into the limelight because it was the 50th anniversary of the Natural History Unit. The BBC spread his message to ensure that his wisdom is shared internationally. His down to earth personality and passion for all life forms is something that everybody no matter their age or culture admires. I was surprised to note that at least 20 species and genera, both living and extinct, have been named in his honor! Indeed, the legacy of Sir David Frederick Attenborough is eternal and he has sealed his place in history as not only a broadcaster but also an environmental expert and educator.
