How My Sister Made Effective Use of Her Water [Thematic Report]

by Seojin Lee | 24-03-2020 02:00 recommendations 0

Water is the most important substance of life; there is no known organism that can survive without water. A human can survive weeks without food, but can only survive 3 days without water. Even though water is this crucial for living, there are many people across the globe who cannot afford clean water to drink. However, to help these struggling people, we must first learn to make the most effective use of water ourselves. This is exactly what my sister did.
It all started when my sister wanted to find out how clean the tap water was, here in Seoul, South Korea. This was because she felt like money was being wasted on all the "drinking water" that was being produced. She thought: "How much money and water can we save if we were able to drink the tap water?" To find this out, she started a research project with a few of her friends. After learning about how the water was purified in Seoul after going to a purifying center, it turned out that the Korean government had spent massive amounts of money towards an advanced purifying system for the tap water to be drinkable.
After some more research, she and her friends figured out that tap water costs significantly less than buying bottled water, and had just as many (if not more) nutrients. Surveys also showed that the main reason why we had tended to drink bottled water over tap water was due to the negative stigma around tap water, as it was believed to be unsanitary for drinking.
To solve this problem, my sister and her friends set up an experiment, where they had a few Korean high school students as volunteers. She poured the two types of water into different cups and made sure to blindfold the volunteers so that they wouldn't know which type of water they drank. It turned out that most of the volunteers were not able to differentiate between the two cups of water.
In conclusion, tap water in Seoul was not unsanitary, tasted the same as bottled water, and was also cheaper. With this discovery, my sister spread this report out towards friends and family. I believe that through her hard work, she was able to make effective use of her water, convince others to do the same, and overall make the world a better place.    :)

*All this information comes from my sister's words.

  • Sang Su Mentor says :
Hi Seojin Lee, this is a mentor, Sang Su.

It is true that many people have a stereotype that drinking tap water would be dangerous. Its odor also contributes to this stereotype. However, if one holds water in a cup for 30 minutes, the odor would be gone away. As you mentioned, people have to gain a new cognitive process thinking that tap water (restricted to Korea) would be safe to drink. It will require hard work.

Thank you for sharing a story about your sister.

    Best,

    Sang Su Lee.

  • Taehyun Mentor says :
Hello Seojin, this is mentor Taehyun.

Thank you for the report about water. People have a tendency which makes people think that tap water is slightly not cleaner than bottled water, and tap water has a strange odor. But, certified tap water is really clean and we don't have to buy bottled water to get cleaner water. It is dangerous to generalize, but when your region's water supplying company approved their water as safe to drink, you can drink tap water safely, or boil it to sanitize one more time. Drinking tap water is better than bottled one because we don't use plastic bottles! So, very beneficial!

    Thank you for the report!

    Greeeen cheers!
