We are living in the 21^st century. We can’t imagine a day without using the technology. Have you ever wondered the effects of using technology on our environment?

I am going to discuss regarding the same with you all.

We are seeing a drastic change in climate around us. The reason behind is technology. The temperature is increasing, weather and climate is changing drastically in some parts, increase in diseases, and many more issues.

I want to share a few factors that harms our environment due to technology.

1.       Increase in power consumption – Citizens of today are mostly dependent on electronic gadgets maybe it is their mobile, IPads, Computers, T.Vs. It is being used at home, office, school,…. This leads to excess power consumption. A few centuries before, electricity was used only for lighting their house. It is not the case today. It is being used 24/7 for charging our gadgets and other household appliances. We consume power for our kitchen appliances such as mixer, grinder, fridge, oven and for dishwasher. Apart from that we use washing machine, t.v, computer. So all this leads to the increase in power consumption.

2.       Increase in pollution due to travel – In the olden days, people relied on animals for travel such as bullock carts, horses and camels and others. Now most of us, prefer to travel by planes to save our time but this adversely effects our environment. This increases in the pollution of air, land, water, noise,…

3.       Electronic waste generation – The amount of e-waste generated every year is increasing due to upgradation in technology. We prefer to switch over to the latest electronic gadgets. So this leads to the wastage of the old gadgets. There are many substances that are used in the manufacture of these gadgets such as arsenic, lead, mercury and many more. When these old gadgets are not properly recycled and if you just throw them away in landfills it causes serious life threating issues on our health as well as to the environment. We need to follow the 6Rs – Reduce, reuse, recycle, repair, rethink and refuse. It is our prime responsibility to strictly follow the 6Rs to save our environment.

4.       Deforestation – We tend to cut down on our trees and forests as we require more space and land area for our technological advancement. This leads to the depletion of the natural habitats of animals and birds and also they become endangered or extinct. There is also loss of biodiversity and thereby it affects our environment.
