[Thematic report]Chemical Product(human made or naturally produced) that affects the environment positively or negatively——Fly ash from garbage incineration.

My team and I had investigated the issue of urban waste disposal in Macau, however, we have dug out a shocking old story.

In about 2011, the ash from the incinerator of the Macao Garbage Incineration Center was dumped to the Jiu'ao landfill without special treatment. The fly ash floated out of the landfill and affected the health of residents.

According to the survey, at the same time, according to statistics, Macao produces about 500,000 tons of municipal waste every year. It is incinerated at the garbage incineration center in Beian Industrial Zone, Taipa, Macao [1], and the amount of fly ash is 20,000 to 30,000 tons /year. With the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Macau ¡¯s tourists will continue to increase, and the amount of urban garbage will also gradually increase. Huge environmental concerns.

Fly ash is the residue collected from the flue gas purification system of the waste incineration plant, generally including dust ash and absorption tower fly ash [2], the amount of fly ash generated is about 3% ~ 5% of the amount of waste incineration [ 3-4], and fly ash contains high concentrations of toxic pollutants such as heavy metals, dioxins, furans, etc., and is classified as hazardous waste [5], and also included in the "National List of Hazardous Waste".

Later, because the public protests in Jiu'ao attracted the attention of the chief executive of Macau, the problem of fly ash in the incineration of garbage in Macao was resolved. But fly ash is still a substance that can't be ignored and will harm human health.

Hi YILE CHEN, this is a mentor Sang Su Lee.

It's so sad that every year, the amount of waste tends to increase rather than to increase. More and more ash from incineration, then, would be produced. To prevent this grim future, what should we do? Of course, finding ways to process waste products would be a good one.

If you add how do these toxic products such as furan in ash affect the environment, the article would be better.

Thank you for your report! Nice job~

  • Taehyun Mentor says :
Hello YILE CHEN, this is mentor Taehyun.

Thank you for the regional story related to the chemicals. Chemical in the trash is a really serious problem. Because usually trash is thrown away to the landfill or burnt up. But, in this process, chemicals in the trash can spill from the product, and it can pollute soil or atmosphere, as you've said. We have to reduce the chemical trash and try to find another good way to process those trash.

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!

Although the incineration is helpful method for the management of a huge lump of waste, it can be problematic to manage the ash .

    Keep writing and shining.
Hope to know more from you in coming days.
