Thematic report: How important is cattle that contributes much to methane gas to environment?

by Asmita Gaire | 20-04-2020 20:24 recommendations 0

As we all know that today's environment isn't as good as it used to be in the past. It's getting polluted day by day. The pollinants are the major reasons for this, which can be various chemical products or product in other forms that are either natural or man-made. But there are some products as well that benefits the environment otherwise, in this rate of production of harmful chemicals, the world would have collapsed if they were no any good form of chemicals.

Actually, while talking about chemicals, it's not harmful if it's concentration doesn't exceed the baseline. Like for an example, even oxygen can become harmful for human if it's concentration increases. So, is in the case of environment.

As a veterinarian, I would like to share you all about chemicals that is produced from cow the way it affects the environment.
It's methane gas.

Have you heard about cow faltulence contributing to climate change?
Well, if yes!
Here's a good news for you that, cow faltulence isn't that bad for the environment however it's burp is.

Cows, being ruminants have complex stomach that help digesting food by fermentating the food. In this process, methane gas is released into atmosphere when they burp.

The population is growing tremendously and agricultural land is getting converted for industries and settlement. In this regard, dependence in livestock is getting much higher. But many people are against regarding animal meats consumption due to the fact that they are contributing much in greenhouse gas emission.

If cows were their own country, they would be the third-biggest greenhouse gas emitter in the world. Farming requires huge amounts of land. Forests, wetlands and savannas are carbon sinks: They absorb and store carbon. But when these ecosystems are chopped down to make way for farms, that land turns into a carbon source.

Since, cows are the most carbon-intensive part of the food industry. Cattle are responsible for 62 percent of agricultural emissions. Eating fewer of them is one of the most powerful steps an individual can take toward protecting the planet.

Methane in the Earth's atmosphere is a chemical compound and a strong greenhouse gas with a global warming potential (GWP) 104 times greater than CO2 in a 20-year time frame. The main impact of methane is on a global scale, as a greenhouse gas. Although levels of methane in the environment are relatively low, its high "global warming potential" (21 times that of carbon dioxide) ranks it amongst the worst of the greenhouse gases. However, it also provided some useful impact. Methane provides a great environmental benefit, producing more heat and light energy by mass than other hydrocarbon, or fossil fuel, including coal and gasoline refined from oil, while producing significantly less carbon dioxide and other pollutants that contribute to smog and unhealthy air.

Interestingly, cattle that contribute much to greenhouse gas emissions; in Nepal beef farming is not allowed. What about in yours?

Hi Asmita Gaire, this is a mentor Sang Su Lee.

I guess it's always the problem of those who are greedy. People produce something excessively even though they do not need it. I hope people would cut the unnecessary meet consumption so that the environment is safe from CH4, a green house gas.

In Korea, we raise cows FYI.

    Thank you for your report!

  • Taehyun Mentor says :
Hello Asmita Gaire, this is mentor Taehyun!

Thank you for the report about methane. Cow's fart is a good(?) source of the methane, and as you've explained, methane is a critical greenhouse gas. Because of the people all around the world's diet is biased to the meat consuming, many cows are being grown in the world. We have to try not to overconsume the beef for the environment!

    Green cheers!

    Hello Asmita didi!!

I hope you are fine and doing well!!

Methane is one of the main green house gas, contributing almost 20%.
Anaerobic fermentation in ruminates led to emission of Methane.

    Thank you for sharing!

Hope to learn more from you!!

    GREEN CHEERS!!

    Regards,
    Sonika!
