The United Nations estimates that the global population, currently at 6 billion, will peak at about 10 billion by 2050 and then stabilize or even decline. A question immediately following the statement Can the Earth feed that many people? It is understood that even if food crops increase sufficiently, other renewable and non-renewable resources including coal, petroleum, forests etc. are already under pressure. Our food production has doubled over the last few decades, but there are still people who go hungry.
The theme of the World Environment Day, on June 5, this year has been decided as 'Think, Eat and Save'. The aim behind keeping this theme for the special day is to discourage the wastage of food and to promote the food loss campaign, encouraging people to reduce their food print. environment.
The amount of food waste produced globally each year is more than enough to feed the 900 million hungry people in the world. Among the most widely wasted food products are vegetables, seafood, and cereals. As human numbers continue to rise, they create needs for land for purposes other than the production of food. Among these are urbanization and transportation. Each of these sectors claims most of the cultivable lands in almost every country.
Unfortunately, when it comes to food waste, the problem isn?t just a malodorous garbage pile in the landfills. Wasted food means wasted water, energy, and land, plus all the trash that builds up from discarded packaging and the greenhouse gases emitted during production and disposal processes.
The imbalance between population growth and food production has lead to misery. Therefore a large numbers of countries continue to face food crisis similar to which used to occur frequently in the old France. This imbalance also could lead to a predicted 'World War 3' would be solely caused due to the shortage in food and water resources.
We have to take immediate action to reduce our 'Foodprint':
THINK - Be aware of what you buy. Avoid buying meat or fish from endangered species or foodstuff that use vegetable products of questionable origin. Get to know your food.
EAT - Be aware of what you eat. Where possible, eat only sustainably caught or produced food.
SAVE - Be aware of the environment. Save the environment through promoting and supporting sustainable food production and consumption.
As a part of my initiatives to combat Food wastage, whenever I provide free food to the needy or the laborers I talk to them about how food is important and why we should not waste it.
The majority of hungry people live in developing countries since they are considered less important than people in developed countries. The only way to solve the problem is to reduce our population by imposing strict laws about birth control. The other way is to distribute our food evenly to all people around the world. If food were distributed evenly to all people, famine will not happen. Now, it is time to face reality. It is time to change our world. It is time to solve our problem.
