[Thematic Report]: calculating the environmental cost of one of human activities.

Agriculture is the profession that has been practiced by human beings for centuries. Since the traditional farming method is not enough to feed the growing population by cultivating on limited land, it is customary to use various fertilizers to increase the yield. In this report, I am going to focus on fertilizer, specially nitrogen fertilizer usage and its impact on environment.

Agriculture accounts for eightieth of human-caused inhalation anesthetic emissions globally and for 8-14% of all greenhouse gasses. Nitrous oxide (N2O) (more usually called happy gas) could be a powerful contributor to global warming. it's 265 times more powerful at grabbing heat within the atmosphere than carbon dioxide and depletes our ozonosphere.

N2O is that the third-most-important greenhouse emission after carbon dioxide and methane. still as trapping heat, it depletes ozone within the stratosphere, contributive to the hole. Once free into the atmosphere, N2O remains active for over one hundred years.

There are a number of natural and human sources of N2O emissions. concerning 40 % of nitrous oxide emissions come back from human activities, and of those, main contribution are from the approach we tend to use land—particularly agriculture.

Crop yields across the planet have accumulated over and over and repeatedly the utilization of nitrogen fertilizers and alternative improved farming practices. But once soil is exposed to plentiful nitrogen in its active type (as in fertilizer), microbic reactions turn up that unleash N2O emissions. The unrestricted use in nitrogen fertilizers, therefore, created a large uptick in emissions.

In Canada, the third largest source of Green House Gas emission comes from the agriculture and 0.4% contribution is due to use of inorganic fertilizer.

In Nepal, there is increasing demand of chemical fertilizers. The main chemicals to increase crop yield: urea, DAP and muriate of potash are being used at the rate of 63 percent, 32 percent and 2 percent respectively to three most planted crops—rice, maize and wheat. Government body also provides subsidy for these chemicals. Though farmers are not using in recommended amount but the demand is high and all farmers are not enough aware about harmful effect of the chemical fertilizers.

These pictures briefly describe the source of Nitrous Oxide and where do Canada¡¯s Green House come from. I hope you have enjoyed reading.

Hi Bal krishna Pandey, this is a mentor Sang Su Lee.

Thank you for your hard work in finding and calculating the environmental costs that take when one does agriculture. Agricultural activities are unavoidable for people to survive. Actually agricultural revolution has made humans' lives comfortable. However, unnecessary and over agricultural activities can incur green house emission. Therefore, it would be imperative to cultivate proper amount of lands.

    Cheers!

Hello Bal krishna Pandey, this is mentor Taehyun!

Thank you for your article on the link between nitrogen oxides and global warming! In fact, nitrogen oxides are harmful to the environment because they can easily cause air pollution, such as photochemical smog, as well as global warming. These nitrogen oxides also come from the mentioned inorganic fertilizers, but most of them are known to come from the fumes of cars! I should have a lifestyle to reduce these nitrogen oxides!

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!
