Pollution, contamination, or destruction that occurs as a consequence of an action, that can have short-term or long-term ramifications is considered an environmental impact. Most adverse environmental impacts also have a direct link to public health and quality of life issues. Several successful reductions in pollution levels have been attributed to stricter regulations, including levels of carbon monoxide and more recent reduction in fine particulate matter. Mass transit, as a result of the operations and maintenance of infrastructure, facilities, and vehicles, has numerous potential environmental impacts to manage, including air pollution and greenhouse gas from energy use, noise, and vibrations, water discharges, waste removal of passenger trash, harmful materials such as lead-based paint, mercury, PCBs, asbestos, contaminated soil, and groundwater. Both train and bus operations have significant environmental issues to manage on an on-going continuous basis. Besides regulatory compliance, it befits an agency to reduce environmental impacts in order to pollute less, protect natural resources, and reduce liability and save costly impacts to budgets. |

Thank you for mentioning some general human activities that cause environmental cost. Actually mentors wanted you to choose one of them and calculate the cost with numerical values, but this approach is also fine! Maintenance environmental cost is also sever, which is the cost that I did not think of. Unfortunately, every product that humans made deteriorates in some times. T.T Therefore, it would be imperative to produce appropriate amount of stuffs to reduce those costs.

I read the article that investigated the environmental impact of various human activities. What's interesting about this article was the fact that public transportation, which we thought was just environmentally friendly, was also a side effect. In fact, the atmosphere of encouraging public transportation compared to private cars is prevalent in society, but if you think about it, more people use it compared to private cars, so management will be done more thoroughly, so I never thought that environmental pollution could occur in the process! It was useful!
