[Topic Report] :calculating the environmental cost of one of human activities.

by Alan Portocarrero | 26-05-2020 20:24 recommendations 0

During these days, in isolation, many low and middle income families in Peru, are starting to feel the consequences of the lockdown, for example they suffer from hunger and the lack of sanitation supply. In fact, this  situation is the turning point of debates whether the Government should reopen some moneymaking activities, just to calm down the country. As a result, several families have already taken action, emigrating thus to rural areas. To be implicit ,they seek to get food supply by their own, either growing fruits and vegetables or working. However, this problem, is not just a bad issue but it also has a silver lining because others, both in urban an rural areas, began to compost, aiming to use it back in growing greens and vegetables because they are easier and faster to grow  in dressing, thus get something to eat. Today, I am gladly to talk about this green human activity and share good news at bad time days. Then, in this following article I am going to mention the pros of composting and the environmental cost of not composting.

Before all, Composting does not bring up any cost to environment but vice versa it is a painkiller for both Human and Nature headache. Composting, is often described as nature¡¯s way of recycling organic matter. The process is easy as taking a candy from a baby. This green action, indeed, can be ,in part,  an aid for those people who are suffering the lack of food as consequence of this pandemic. Take the case of my situation, it is hard for me to get a simple onion or carrot because during the lockdown, the prices of several vegetables have increased in great amount. So my family and I looked  for a way of solving our big deal, then, the answer was into the waste bin.  Instead of getting away our organic wastes we just keep them up to utilize them as fertilizer, that way grow our greens and vegetables, due to humus helps plants to grow and improve their quality, likewise. Enough for not dying from starvation. Regarding the environment, Composting reduce land pollution. It is said that, ¡°Organics such as food scraps, food preparation residual, food soiled, paper products, leaves gross clipping, brush and tree trimming comprise over 60% of our waste stream and are completely recyclable¡±(Bohnotal, 2011). By this data, we can assume that if we create a  composting culture we will reduce 60% of pollutants thrown down the ground. Besides, this green action has two big advantages: first it reduces waste pile up in our already-overfilled trash facilities, and second it adds value to the end product. Therefore, composting is sustainability and going green are all the rage and beneficial.

On the other hand, what  happen if we do not compost? Still taking into account that it is extremely easy to put in practice,  great amount of people believe that if they do not fertilize their food waste, it will degrade anyway in a landfill.  However, according to reports from the  CBS News, if we do not compost, it causes major issues in landfills. For instance,

¡°food that goes out with the trash is usually trapped in plastic bags and, often, also in packaging or take-out containers that don¡¯t  let light or air in to finish the natural breakdown. What would normally be organic matter that breaks down quickly becomes artificially preserved in these dark catacombs of containers, sometimes for decade¡±

So this food waste in landfill, increase in 20% more the emission of methane. Methane, in turn, contributes to global warming . Consequently, we have to go in composting as soon as possible because it will definitely benefit  mother nature.

Finally, in this article I have mentioned how important is the activity of composting, for example it benefits in great extent to our environment, reducing land pollution . A part from this, we can use this natural process to solve some necessities just like what I am living currently because, using fertilizer we can get quality foods from a really simple way. On the other hand, I added the issues which brings the habit of not composting at home. One of this is the increase of methane in landfills and next global warming.

Extra info,
Hey guys, I want to say sorry for the delay. I did not have a laptop or a Phone these days. So I was not in touch WITH, but now YES, I am happy to get back again.A big sorry for the late, I Will try it does not happen Again.

Happy International Day for Biological Diversity BTW💚💚💚

Hi Alan Portocarrero, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.

It is so sad that many people are facing difficulties even to survive due to COVID-19 because of all the halts of economic activity. In South Korea also, the president Moon Jae In has announced that the economic situation is like during wartime. I hope this disastrous disease would end soon!

Also, I did not know that compositing has this indirect benefits to the earth. Thank you for mentioning about this. I learned a lot. Food waste has become a problem because supply is so excessive. However this supply is trying to meet the demand of greedy people. Even though people do not need to eat this food, they over consume. Therefore, it would be imperative to eat adequate amount of food. Composing is also another way!

    Thank you for your article.

Hello Alan Portocarrero, this is mentor Taehyun!

I read an interesting article about the environmental cost of compost! Food waste is something that needs to be reduced by eating less, but it's still inevitable, and in this case, most people throw it away in a garbage bag. In some countries, it's buried, but in this case, the problem is not only methane gas, but also leachate water as food waste decomposes. In some countries, food waste is dried and turned into animal feed. If composted, it will help produce food similar to feed, creating a virtuous cycle of resources!

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!

    Hey Alan!!

    Its me sandhya from Nepal,

I do hope you are fine there and doing great with your works,

Thanks for your report on the composting,
It is one of the most effective way of using household waste and converting it into biologically important materials,

It can make soil absorption and retention activity more prominent, produce healthy organic food and enhance cation exchange capacity,

    Keep writing,

    Yours,
    Sandhya
