What do you think about determination of sex in various creatures?
As a veterinarian, I thought of sharing this information among everyone. Animals are most commonly categorized as male or female. But do you know what actually determine there sex? Sex determination in human occurs via sex chromosome 'X' and 'Y', where X chromosome from mother and Y chromosome from father results a boy, and X chromosome from both parents results a girl. But the sex determination isn't as easy as it is thought to be. In birds there are two chromosomes Z and W in female and only Z in male. Z chromosome from male and W from female results female while Z from both parents result male offspring. Do you know one interesting thing on ant? A male ant has no father. In an ant, male sperm and female ova when gets fertilized results a female ant. But only female ova also gives rise to offspring and that is always male. So a male ant has no father since there is no fertilization between sperm and ova. In addition to this, in alligators and crocodiles like creatures, sex is determined by weather. After laying eggs, there occurs various changes inside egg; at a certain period of time, when time for sex determination occurs temperature of nest in which egg is present determines the sex. At higher temperature a female gets hatched out and at lower temperature a male gets hatched out. Likewise, in lizard there's always female offspring never a male spring. In addition to this, in fishes like clown fish; when they are small they are always male. When they get mature they get changed into female. The dominant male and dominant female mates but dominant female dies out. Then that dominant male grows and becomes dominant female and takes place of dominant female that has died. While in the position of dominant male comes another male clown fish, and the cycle continues. These are some cycle that occurs in various animals. I hope you find it new and informative. That's really interesting. I've never heard of anything related. The conventional wisdom is that sex is decided by either male or female at birth, but there are some creatures whose sex changes depending on the situation! It's amazing! The mysteries of nature are wonderful :)
