[Thematic Report] Greening Your Purchase of Cleaning Products

by Yvonne An | 16-08-2020 04:27 recommendations 0

For sustaining healthy and attractive conditions within the workplace or household, cleaning products are essential. Not only do they provide the aesthetic and hygienic benefits, but they also remove allergens, dust, and other infectious agents. However, the toxic substances in the cleaning products present multiple environmental and health concerns. The highly concentrated chemicals are classified as extremely hazardous as they create potential storage, handling, and disposal issues for the users. Minimizing these environmental and health threats is a vital incentive for "

going green on your purchases".

It is a major environmental threat that large populations of aquatic species are inhibiting an environment that receives inadequately treated wastes – This is because of the environment's exposure to the toxicity of hazardous chemicals in cleaning products. One example of a toxic chemical is alkylphenol ethoxylate, a prevalent surfactant constituent in cleaners such as disinfectants and detergents. According to literature laboratory research, this chemical provokes adverse reproductive malfunctions in wildlife exposed to contaminated waters.

Then what are the benefits of buying green? Selectively purchasing less hazardous commercial products that contain environment-friendly properties (ex., reduced packaging, low toxicity, biodegradability, low life cycle energy use) can reduce detrimental impacts on building occupants and custodial workers. Additionally, taking steps to minimize exposure to these health and environmental hazards can reduce ambient air and water pollution and enhance indoor air quality while securing the effective cleaning process in eliminating contaminants from buildings' interior.

Hi Yvonne An, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.

Recently, there was a problem with a cleaning product in South Korea also, killing some people. Toxicity of the cleaning product damages not only the environment but also humans. Therefore, it would be better to use environmental friendly products.

    Green cheers!~
