[Thematic Report] Environment and me

by Yvonne An | 16-08-2020 08:05 recommendations 0

Since I live in the Philippines, I have encountered multiple natural disasters, including earthquakes, floods, droughts, landslides, and typhoons. I can still remember that heavy landslide of Catbalogan, the roots of the coconut trees littered across bare roads covered with thick pads of soil, the lone segments of the roofs, the holed walls of the dwellings.

I have learned many significant things from these experiences, including how to alleviate their impacts, coping with natural disasters brought about by climate change, which important policies relevant to the environment should be implemented considering priorities, and most importantly, the spirit of volunteerism. I have become more conscious of the environmental impacts, and how these intensities natural disasters, such as lack of plants and trees in city centers that hold the impact of landslides, loss of biodiversity, pollution of various bodies of water, ineffective waste disposal, lack of renewable energy and recycling drives, or excessive use of fossil fuels. These experiences compelled me to help my community in ways to ease the detrimental impacts of such disasters, such as conducting a study about mapping landslide susceptibility in geographically complex regions using multiple mathematical frameworks for prediction. Through the Tunza Ambassadorship, I was able to explore different environmental issues and learn their immediate or long-run effects and solutions.

Hello Yvonne An this is mentor Taehyun!

I think this year's weather is very extreme. The continuous rainy season, and the hot weather after the rainy season... There's an extreme natural disaster going on in this extreme weather, and I think we're going to have to keep preparing for this kind of course. In a way to reduce casualties as much as possible.

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!
