The 33, A Movie About Miners The movie ¡®The 33¡¯ is based on true events, where 33 miners were trapped beneath ground when the mine they worked at collapsed on top of them in Chili. The mine is owned by a private company, in which it did not have the necessary safety standards and procedures. When the ceiling started to collapse above them, the 33 minors raced down to their refugee. There should have been first aid and medical kits, but there was none. A safety ladder should have also been there, but the ladder was not finished. Based on this, it can be deemed that the company did not care much for the safety of the miners in the case anything happened and it already did to them. Their food stock was also supposed to last them 3 days, although with eating as little as possible they were able to save their food until they were found. In the beginning, when the miners were trapped underground, the company that owned the mine did not have any plan nor would they want to spend any money on rescuing them. However, the Government took it upon them to rescue these miners. Aside for having done the humane thing, rescuing the miners was also done so that the world would view the Chili Government as capable, reliable, and caring to their citizen. While trying to find these miners for 17 days, there have been bickering and the lost of hope but finally the miners could be found. They were also taken out of the mine after two months, as after finding them, the hole was dug bigger so that the miners can be brought to the surface using a special device that allows the miners to come up one by one through a capsule pod. I chose this particular film to review, because it reminded me on a recent lecture about the environment. In my Environmental Science class, we learn about how nature strongly correlates with human lives. We cannot live without the environment, thus it is important to maintain and ensure the well being of the environment. We get our air from trees, plankton, and other organism that produce oxygen. Meanwhile the food we eat is also from nature. We eat vegetables, and plants are also a source of food for farm animals such as cows and lambs. The environment is a source of life, so we must also ensure its sustainability for our future. Mines strongly correlate to nature, because we dig up the ground and make caves to take minerals from it. The product we mine causes damage to the earth as we are digging up a huge hole, and without proper irrigation the mine may flood and be dangerous for the people around it. Let us not forget the dangerous gasses that can be accidentally found whilst digging. Mining itself is already a dangerous task, as depicted in the film. In the movie, we can understand that mining is a dangerous job. Private company who owns these mines also only seeks to profit. So once something goes wrong, especially to their workers, they would not want to spend money in rescuing them. Nevertheless thinking about rescuing them, they did not even spend money to provide proper safety standard and protocols. We can then see that from this movie, the people who ruin the environment do not really care about the nature and they only care about making a profit. This has an influence on the environment, because those who only seek to profit would not care about the damage they do that may effect the environment. |

Hello Ida!
It's your SJ mentor.
Warm greetings from Korea!
Thank you for sharing your thematic report concerning the movie 'The 33'.
I like the reason you choose this movie.
We should aware of the fact that the environment is not far from us, intertwined.
Thus, protecting nature is to say prospering human lives in the future.
Taking the longer view is essential for sustainable development.
Hope things are fine with you.
Green cheers!
Best regards,
SJ mentor.

Hello Ida,
this is your mentor WooJoo.
Thank you for sharing your report about the movie 'The 33'.
Satefy standards and education are the most important for all the workers,
and for other people as well.
I think there is need to doubt what you said "those who seek for benefits won't care about the damage", because we should consider that some people work hard to seek for environmental benefits to protect it.
Mined coal is used as fuel, and this process of mining and burning produces huge amount of gases.
Since it is an environmental report, it would be more helpful if you correlate the movie to effects of mining, more than discussing about morality.
Thank you again for your contribution to Tunza community.
Regards,
WooJoo
