FREE REPORT: DESERT LOCUST AND ITS MANAGEMENT IN NEPAL |
---|

I am glad to share here my review paper in Desert locust which is devastating migratory pest causing huge impact in agricultural and food crops. They have caused innumerable loss in different corners of the world. These pests entered Nepal for the first time in 1962 and then in 1996. In 2020 the pest entered the country from India on three different dates 27th June and continued till 29 th (5 districts), 12 th July (1 district), and 16 th July (2 districts). The swarms migrated to 53 districts and caused the considerable loss in agricultural and field crop in 1118 hectare. These pests are monitored on the basis of environmental factors and many tools and practices such as eLocust3, SMELLS (Soil Moisture for Desert Locust Early Survey), P-locust and SUPARCO Disaster Watch Desert Locust Situation Alert are being used. Their control is critical to food security. Many tools and techniques are integrated for prevention and management of these pests to minimize damage in the existing crops where they migrate. These are physical methods, cultural methods, use of botanicals, green muscle, PAN (phenylacetonitrile) and chemicals. Effective preventive management strategy relies on an improved knowledge of the pest biology, more efficient monitoring and control techniques. Hello Meena!
It's your SJ mentor.
I hope you doing well.
Thank you for introducing desert locusts that cause great damage to food production.
I've never experienced them firsthand, but I've seen an article that says they cause great damage to a wide range of areas.
The average temperature has risen due to climate change, making it a better environment for pests to reproduce.
It is time to think about ways to reduce pests while minimizing the impact on the ecosystem.
Happy New year!
Best regards,
SJ mentor.

Hello Meena,
this is your mentor WooJoo.
Warm greetings from South Korea.
Thank you for sharing this interesting report about Desert Locust.
It is true that locusts are causing huge problems in different corners of the world, especially in agricultural sectors.
It is sad to say that human actions have indirectly caused the increase of their reproduction.
They consume tons of crops each day, and if it worsens, we would lack of food, which is the major concern of climate changes too.
Hopefully the pest biology advances much so that we can solve the problem without harming the nature.
Happy New Year! :)
Regards,
WooJoo
