Ecological effect of part of Kazakh traditions

by Amina Kabdyrakym | 03-01-2021 18:05 recommendations 0

According to World Beef Consumption Per Capita, Kazakhstan took 9th place in beef consumption among all countries. The main reason for it is Kazakh traditions where meat is an essential part of cooking. The most famous food is Beshbarmak, which is translated as five fingers. Most eaten red meat in Kazakhstan are meat from beef, horse, and goat.

As we know, red meat affects health. For example, it, unfortunately, causes heart disease, kidney problems, digestive issues, and colon and rectum cancer, prostate, and pancreatic cancer. Most people who live more than 100 years say that they do not consume meat. Life expectancy in Kazakhstan is approximately 73 years. Research shows that people who do not eat meat live longer.

Apart from health issues from red meat, the first and foremost problem of it is its carbon footprint. Experts say that reducing the production of red meat will reduce the carbon footprint more than cars. According to USDA¡¯s Agricultural Research Service / National Cattlemen¡¯s Beef Association,2018, to produce 1lb of beef required 308 gallons of water. Today more and more companies work on replacing meat with plant-based meats. For example, they use mung beans, beets, peas, brown rice, coconut oil, and potato starch as the main components. As plants require less water to grow, plant-based meat can meet both ecological and people¡¯s patterns. However, Kazakhstan is not familiar with plant-based meat and continues to consume red

meat.

Therefore, there is a need to promote decreasing consuming meat and replace it with other forms of nutrient-rich foods, such as plant-based meat or plants.

    Hello Amina!
    It's your SJ mentor.

    I hope you doing well.
Thank you for writing an report about meat consumption in Kazakhstan.
More resources are needed to produce meat than vegetables.
So far, the texture of cultured meat is not the same as meat, but I hope that research and development will solve this problem.
Let's make a habit of reducing meat and increasing vegetables for health as well as the environment.
Thanks for nice report. I will root for you the whole time.

    Best regards,
    SJ mentor.

    Hello Amina,
    this is your mentor WooJoo.

    Warm greetings from South Korea.
Thank you for sharing such an interesting report.
According to meat consumption statistics in 2020, South Korea was the 28th, which is quite higher than I've thought.
Koreans also consume lots of meat-based diet,
but fortunately vegan-diet is becoming popular nowadays.
Meat production always marked one of the highest gas emission,
therefore I agree that we should decrease its consumption.

    Keep sharing,

    Regards,
    WooJoo
