Concrete, which is great to build houses, infrastructure, etc is a terrible issue to the ocean. Marine life in places where are surronded by concrete is suffering : the fish is no longer around, the oyster and corals are disappering and the concrete is lifeless for decades. So, in oder to tackle with this complicated problem, Shimrit Perkol-Finkle and Ido Sella came up with an alternative "ECOncrete".
ECOncrete can be used in collaboration with bespoke project designs within the marine, coastal and freshwater environments. This new concrete is designed with tiny holes which allows small fish to live in, seaweed can grow on top of it, corals and oysters appear around it. Interestingly, it is stronger than normal concrete. As a result, this concrete is eco-system for human, that is why these scientists are designing ports, breakwaters, seabeds and seawalls that are build with the ocean in mind. This wonderful invention were placed in Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York. All in all, I have to say without any doubt that ECOncrete is one of the most interesting things that the human has ever invented. It has a beautiful structure and it can deal with one of the most problematic issue for the human.

Hello Nhu!
It's your SJ mentor.
Warm greetings from Korea!
Thank you for introducing the concrete that was reborn as an environmentally friendly material.
It seems to be small holes are in concrete, and I wonder how the mechanical strength is stronger than conventional concrete.
If the only difference from conventional concrete is the pores, please explain how living things can survive on them.
I hope the technology will deepen and many materials that are helpful to the environment will be developed.
Keep writing!
Best regards,
SJ mentor.

Hello Nhu,
this is your mentor WooJoo.
I hope you are doing well.
Thank you for sharing such a helpful report.
Currently, engineering is being applied in materials in order to replace current toxic, harmful building materials.
If ECOncerete is durable enough, it would nice to use such material to build new bridges, ports etc.
It would be nice if you could tell us how the concretes are chemically affecting the marine system,
or what the ECOncrete is made by, as well.
Keep sharing!
Regards,
WooJoo
