Environmental jobs (thematic report)

by Malika Rustamova | 21-01-2021 07:54 recommendations 0

The deterioration of the environmental situation and the danger of the destruction of the ecological balance on the planet require taking any measures. Although human activity often has an extremely negative impact on the environment, many of us are trying to protect nature and are racing for a sustainable future. Nowadays there are a lot of different types of eco professions, for instance, conservation scientists and forester, energy auditor, environmental engineer, environmental lawyer, hydrologist, landscape architect, solar photovoltaic installers.

As more young people identify climate change as the defining issue of our generation, more are seeking careers that will have a positive environmental impact. Hence, environmental careers focused on conservation, alternative energy, and using engineering to solve environmental problems are increasingly desirable.

Being keen on STEM and ecology, I most like the profession, environmental engineering. Therefore, I'd like to tell you a bit about this job. Environmental engineering is the branch of engineering that is concerned with protecting people from the effects of adverse environmental effects, such as pollution, as well as improving environmental quality. Such engineers work to improve recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The practice of environmental engineering dates back to the dawn of civilization. Ever since groups of people began living in semi-permanent settlements, they have had to deal with the challenges of providing clean water and disposing of solid waste and sewage. With the growth of cities and the advent of large-scale farming and manufacturing, people have also had to worry about air quality and soil contamination.
Currently, environmental engineers work in various settings. They usually work from in offices while planning designs or working on environmental permitting and regulatory issues. However, they may work at industrial sites or outdoors while conducting inspections or coordinating a facility's waste management activities. Most environmental engineers work full time. Those who manage projects often work overtime to monitor progress and meet deadlines. Examples of structures that environmental engineers have built are sewerage systems, wastewater treatment plants, green roofs, and air purification mechanisms, such as wet scrubbers and cyclones.
Critical skills needed by environmental engineers include a working knowledge of chemical engineering, fluid dynamics, geography, geology, and hydrology. Also, because of the numerous legal issues involved and the prevalence of litigation in environmental issues, environmental engineers must be familiar with applicable laws, and many of them are also practicing attorneys.

Now researchers believe the green jobs would not only steer the planet away from the worst effects of climate change but would also revitalize the world economy as new, eco-friendly industries begin to flourish. The International Labour Organization reports that a greener economy could create 24 million jobs worldwide — if the right policies are implemented.

    Hello Malika,
    this is your mentor WooJoo.

I hope you are doing well.
Thank you for sharing your report about what environmental engineers do.
It is true that the environmental engineers have a lot of potential,
and their future seems bright, since more and more experts would be required for resolving the current and upcoming environmental problems.
I think it is good that they can work in different positions based on their knowledge,
and I believe that this would increase the environmental situations.

    Keep sharing

    Regards,
    WooJoo

    Hello Malika!
    It's your SJ mentor.

    Warm greetings from Korea!
Thank you for introducing environmental engineers who are trying to solve environmental problems.
I have never thought about the history of environmental engineering, but I think you explained it easily.
Environmental engineers may engage in various duties, such as enterprises or government research institutes, administrative agencies, infrastructure, etc.
Professional knowledge is required to analyze complex problems and derive solutions.
The Republic of Korea is also taking preemptive measures to realize the green economy.
I hope the younger generation will be interested in environmental engineering to solve environmental problems.

    Keep writing!

    Best regards,
    SJ mentor.
