[Thematic Report] Environmental Jobs

by Ananya Dave | 26-01-2021 04:32 recommendations 0

There are an array of jobs and industries that employ environmentally friendly methods of production from organic farming, eco-architecture, environmental investing to renewable energy. I have a particular interest in organic farming as gardening and agriculture are subjects that motivate me and areas in which I see being a part of my future career. Simply put, organic farming is the production of crops without substances that may be dangerous to nature as well as humans. Produce is grown without the input of chemical pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers, growth boosters, hormones and other such synthetic components that are used in commercial farming.

Organic farming reduces negative environmental impacts such as the killing biodiversity through the use of chemicals, reduces the risk of harmful nitrous fertilizers running off into water body swich may cause oceanic dead zones leading to the loss of aquatic life due to low oxygen levels due to the fertilizers over stimulating the growth of algae, whilst being optimally nutritious and safe for human consumption.

One of the main principles of organic farming is being environmentally friendly methods of farming such as maintaining soil quality of the farmland in order to prevent soil degradation and erosion as well as limiting or wholly eliminating pollution in the farming process. Hence, the biodiversity in the area is protected and new biodiversity may even be attracted to the area and recycling is encouraged. There is also a focus on limiting the unnecessary consumption of resources in order to provide a sustainable future for the coming generations.

Some common organic farming processes include:

Crop rotation: This involves switching or changing the crop/produce that is grown on an area of land after a period of time so that the nutrients in the soil are not depleted as they would usually be during intensive farming methods, due to the different roots in the soil issues of soil erosion will also be adverted. Additionally, pest infestations and chemical contamination are prevented as different pests affect different species of crop so changing them will reduce the risk of an infestation and by consequence remove the need for use of chemical pesticides.

Green Manures and Animal Manures and Compost: This is the method of mixing green plants with soil so that when it decomposes in the soil it enriches the plant with necessary nutrients as it is organic matter which will improve the quality and survival rate of the crop as there are more nutrients available and more moisture available in the soil. An alternative or a manure that can be used complementary is animal manures as they are free of chemicals but provide the necessary nutrients for the crop to grow. Organic matter such as left over foods such as fruit peels can be composted and used as manure which is very beneficial as it is a means of recycling wasted organic materials.

    Hello Ananya!
    It's your SJ mentor.

I hope you are doing well.
Thank you for writing a report introducing eco-friendly production methods and jobs.
The long-term stability of pesticides and chemical fertilizers has yet to be fully verified.
As people begin to pay attention to health, they are interested in eco-friendly agricultural products instead of paying attention to existing cheap and inexpensive agricultural products.
I think organic farming is also focused on sustainability.
From a circular perspective of resources, a healthy ecosystem can be built by not accumulating harmful substances.
Currently, it is a pricey method of growing crops, but I hope this method becomes a trend by realizing economies of scale.

    Keep writing!

    Best regards,
    SJ mentor.

    Hello Ananya,
    this is your mentor WooJoo.

    Warm greetings from South Korea.
Thank you for sharing such an interesting report regarding environmental jobs.
I am glad to know that you have such interests in organic farming and gardening!
I like that the organic farming does not use chemical pesticides,
and I can clearly see its advantages on product and the environment, as well as on people.
I think that the crop rotation is a very smart technique, since it can grow plants in a more suitable and optimum condition for each of them.
I wonder if you tried any of the two methods before!

    Keep sharing

    Regards,
    WooJoo
