Thematic report: Eco-friendly mobility |
---|
by Okoth Okoth | 03-02-2021 14:55 0 |
Not so many people fancy getting a bicycle ride in towns. To some extent, even those considering themselves as environmental warriors like Greta would prefer motorvehicle to a bicycle ride.
Embracing eco-friendly mobility in our cities requires an understanding of the importance of a pollution-free cities and why we need to improve our cities air quality. In 2007, Amsterdam became the first large Western City which embraced the use of bicycles as opposed to cars as a private means of movement. This milestone requires planning if the same has to be achieved in other cities. I reside in Kisumu City, one of the three cities in Kenya. Kisumu city suffers from poor planning. There are no pedestrians lanes and if in case there are; they are not marked/labbeled for pedestrian use. There is an evident conflict between pedestrians and motorists on road use. Though cycling is a means of public transport within the city, motorcyclists still dominate the public transportation. Sustainable urban eco-friendly mobility requires a mind shift: where transport in public service vehicles, private cars and trucking give way to different modes of public transport such as bicycle and pedestrian lanes. More and more cities around the world are rising to the challenge. Creating sustainable solutions requires proper planning in order to create climate-safe cities.

Hello Okoth!
It's your SJ mentor.
I hope you are doing well.
Thank you for telling us your thoughts on eco-friendly transportations.
Car emissions from the city centre can cause problems such as London smog and LA smog, which have a fatal effect on the health of living things.
In addition, carbon dioxide promotes global warming.
Therefore, we need a shift to eco-friendly transportation.
In the case of motorcycles, efforts should be made to supply models powered by electric motors and batteries, not internal combustion engines.
Green cheers!
Best regards,
SJ mentor.

Hello Okoth,
this is your mentor WooJoo.
Thank you again for sharing your report regarding eco-friendly mobility.
I understand that first of all, understanding why we need eco-mobility and planning for its use are as important as participating in them.
How great would be if there were adequate space and lines for pedestrian and bicycle riders, so that people can enjoy riding and walking.
Hopefully required facilities and road differentiation are planned and implemented so the use of engine motorvehicles.
Keep writing
Regards,
WooJoo
